Memorial
to honor
veterans

Dr. Stephen Kabisch checks out the damage to the front of his dental clinic Tuesday morning as his staff helps a
patient into a secondary entrance. Bob Weaver was driving his wife to the dentist's office when their car jumped the
curb and slammed into the front of the building pushing the wall back several feet.
Court denies
request or
reserve status

MONTAGUE - The price
quote in hand, and the basic
design approved by the
Montague County
Commissioner's Court,
County Judge Tommie
Sappington and County
Veterans Service officer
Randy Duckworth are ready
to mount a charge to raise
the funds and erect the
Montague County Veterans
Memorial on the courthouse
lawn.
Monday morning, Bret
Hanes, memoralist for
Lancaster Memorials of
Bowie, presented a price
quote and design plans for
the memorial to the commis-
sioner's court.
Duckworth, with Judge
Sappington's support, had
approached the court a year
ago about the need to erect a
memorial to all of the ser-
vicemen and women from
Montague County.
"I've got some people and
Randy's got some (to
approach about donating),"
Judge Sappington excitedly
told Hanes and the court,
"We've just been waiting for
a (price) quote."
The 30 foot long, 8 foot
tall, 14 inch thick black gran-
ite memorial with room for
some 4,820 names will cost
$68,300, not counting the
concrete base, wheelchair
accessible sidewalks and
porch leading to the memori-
al.
The court had already
given the project and its
location its blessing.
Monday the court voted to
include the cost of the con-
crete work as part of a larger
project to replace all of the
sidewalks around the court-
house.
Hanes said the current
plan is for between 3,000
and 4,000 names to be laser
etched and painted onto the
black granite with room to
add names periodically.
An option is to either list

MONTAGUE - Former
Pet. 1 Constable's applica-
tion to be a reserved consta-
ble in Precinct 2, and thus
preserve his peace officer's
license, was rejected by the
Montague County
Commissioner's Court
Monday morning by a 3-2
vote.
Parker, who ran as a
Democrat, was defeated in
November's general election
by political newcomer and
republican Stefanie Horton
just days after she graduated
from the police academy.
Mrs. Horton took office Jan.
1.
Pet. 2 Constable Ronnie
Reynolds, who also took
office Jan. 1, presented the
request to the court inform-
ing the court Parker would
be an unpaid reserve respon-
sible for paying his own
bond, paying his own
expenses and being responsi-
ble for any cost of his own
state-mandated training.
Pet. 4 Comm. Bob
Langford of Nocona asked
Reynolds why he would
need a reserve officer.
"I plan on taking a vaca-
tion and (time away for)
training," Reynolds, husband
of Pet. 2 Justice of the Peace
Karen Reynolds, told the
court.
Langford said he was
concerned about additional
liability for the county.
Reynolds said if the court
was concerned about some-
one supervising Parker, he
noted he, Reynolds, had 30
years in law enforcement, 22
of which was a supervising
officer.
"My main deal is if we
don't have to take more lia-
bility on. That's what I look
at," Langford said.
Pet. 2 Comm. James
Gamblin also told the court
he had concerns about the
appointment.
One of the members
asked if the county had ever
had reserve constables
before.
"I think Mr. Conway had
one, and we had one in
Precinct 1, Mr. Johnston,"
Reynolds said.
Reynolds ' predecessor,
Herman Conway, secured
the court's permission to

check out the flagged site for the Montague County Veterans Memorial to go on the northeast corner of the court-
house square. Lancaster Memorials representative Bret Hanes, left, explained how the 30 foot long, 8 foot high black
granite monument will sit in a winged shape facing the courthouse. Nocona Fire Chief Rusty Henley listens.
