Kids In Action
The Greensheet and VOLUNTEER HOUSTON collaborate to bring you the following information on
volunteer opportunities for young people.
A FUND RAISING WALK scheduled for September 23 will support the campaign against drunk driving.
Called "Strides for Changes", the walk will take place at Sam Houston Race Park. You're invited to
participate as a walker, or you can volunteer to help with setup, registration, and assisting at various
points along the route. A barbecue cook-off will take place immediately after the event, and
volunteers will be entitled to enjoy all the spicy fare offered. The minimum age for volunteers is 14.
i
SUN AND SAND await you as a volunteer at the annual "Texas Adopt-a-Beach Fall Cleanup", taking
• place September 23 all along the Texas Gulf Coast. Teaming up with other volunteer "beach buddies",
you can help remove debris that spoils the appearance of our shoreline and poses hazards to marine
wildlife. (Some of the debris will be recycled to fund other environmental improvement projects.) Call
now to reserve a place for yourself on the beach of your choice. There is no minimum age if
0 accompanied by an adult; otherwise the minimum age is 15.
® CELEBRATE GRANDPARENTS DAY one day early by participating in a visit to local nursing homes on
0 Saturday, September 9, in honor of Grandparents Day. If you have some time available that morning,
plan on coming to any of three meeting places (near the Galleria, Willowbrook Mall, or in Kingwood)
• and teaming with other volunteers to visit one of several scheduled facilities. You'll be given
£ handmade Grandparents Day cards and other goodies to share with the persons you visit. There's no
minimum age for participation, but each volunteer will be responsible for arranging his or her
• transportation to the meeting place and to the nursing home visited.
FOSTER A FELINE for an all-volunteer agency that adopts out homeless cats. If you're capable of
• providing temporary room and board to a cat or kitten while other volunteers try to secure a
^ permanent placement, this agency wants to hear from you. Placements are arranged at special "Adopt
a Cat" stations set up at a number of cooperating pet supply stores. No minimum age is involved.
•
^ YOUNG PERSONS (ages 15 through 21) are wanted to tutor elementary and middle school children in
reading and writing. (Younger volunteers are welcome if they have a strong background in phonics.)
Tutorial sessions can be scheduled anytime between 3:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on weekday evenings. The
program is based in Missouri City but draws students from southwest Houston and surrounding
locales. Comprehensive training will be provided.
FOR SELF-STARTERS: "Adopt" a street near your home. Simply scout out and remove soda cans, candy
wrappers, and other litter that keeps that street from looking its best. You'll take a lot of pride every
time you go down "your street", knowing that it looks as good as it does because of you!
DID YOU KNOW that 60% of adult volunteers began volunteering when they were below the age of 18?
For additional information on volunteer opportunities, please contact VOLUNTEER HOUSTON at
713-965-0031, or visit the "Just for Kids" section of their Web site: www.volunteerhouston.org/kids
