Create Paradise With A Pool
Have a cool summer with these tips on pool building,
pool partying and water safety.
By: Christie Bohm Chase, Staff Writer
This summer, wouldn't it be nice to spend
more time in your yard enjoying a cool,
refreshing swimming pool? Pools are as
functional as they are beautiful. They bring
us enjoyment and they add to our
landscape. They have the ability to relieve
stress and relax us while providing a great
place for exercising or entertaining guests.
Today there are millions of choices of
inground pools for you to consider adding
to your home. The investment is
considerable, but the benefits are out of
this world.
Pool Building 101
Selection of a pool company is a crucial
step in buying a pool. You will be paying a
lot of money for your water haven; so,
make sure that the pool company you
choose does quality work. Your pool
company will help you decide on pool
placement, size, depth, and shape. When
shopping for a pool company, look at
samples of their work, make sure they
follow construction specifications and
building codes, find out what their
guarantees and warranties are, and
whether or not they offer pool service after
completion. This is a very big commitment;
even a small inground pool can run upward
of $12,000. So, look carefully at your
options. Once you've selected a pool
company, the exciting part begins -
construction!
There are primarily three types of
inground swimming pools available: vinyl-
lined, fiberglass, and concrete. Concrete
pools allow for the most design variation.
The concrete (referred to as gunite) is
sprayed over steel rods that are shaped to
the size of the excavation hole. Vinyl-lined
and fiberglass pools are pre-formed, and
you choose among the shapes and sizes
offered.
Inground pool prices vary according to
many things, such as type of pool you
choose and area of the country you build
in. For instance, it is more costly to build a
cement pool in the north, because there is
greater chance that it will shift and crack
when the ground freezes. However, in
southern states a concrete swimming pool
generally costs less to build because of
milder weather conditions. Prices also vary
at different times of the year. Buying a pool
in the off-season can be a wise decision.
You often get more attention and time from
the salesperson since appointments are
less likely to be scheduled one after the
other. Also, some builders offer better
prices to stimulate off-season pool sales. A
great pool can be achieved within most
pool buyers' budgets, and a predetermined
spending limit can help you get the most for
your money.
When planning for your pool, map out a
landscape for your entire backyard.
Planning ahead will ensure that you leave
room for other yard items that you may
want to add later, including: landscaping, a
barbecue, a deck, special yard lighting, or a
pool house. Planning the landscape prior to
installing will ultimately save you money.
Another way to save a bit of money is to
consider clearing your land yourself. You
will save the expense of having the pool
company remove any landscaping and
shrubbery by tackling your yard yourself.
Today's pools are virtually maintenance
free. Most feature self cleaners with
automatic timers. There are also options as
to the type of chemicals used to keep your
pool clean. Salt-water pools are on the rise
and competing with standard chlorine
treated pools. Salt-water pools clean the
water by running it through a pump filled
with salt that disinfects the water. Unlike
chlorine which causes red-eye and dry skin,
salt water is not as harsh for swimmers. Salt
water systems cost a little more initially, but
may be worth it in the end. Ask your pool
company for more details on pool chemicals
and cleaning systems.
Pool Party Pizzazz
There is something magical about pool
parties. Whether celebrating a birthday,
graduation, anniversary or just the fact that
it's summer, pool parties are perfect for
almost any occasion. Surrounded by a
casual yet fun atmosphere, swim soirees
are relatively easy to host and require little
advance planning because once in the pool,
most guests entertain themselves.
These planning tips will help make your
pool party come together in a snap.
• When drawing up your guest list,
think about the amount of space
available in your pool in relation to
the number of people you're
inviting. If your space is limited,
keep the number of guests small to
ensure that everyone will be able
to swim and to help prevent
accidents.
• To give your yard a festive flare,
string little white strands of lights
on fences, food tables, umbrellas
and awnings.
• Float beach balls in the water to
decorate the pool and give your
guests something fun to play with.
• Make sure that your yard is neatly
cut and groomed prior to the party.
After swimming suggest a game of
tag, hide and seek or kickball.
• Set up a table with towels on it.
Most guests forget to bring a towel
to pool parties.
Water Safety
Many pool owners agree that during the
summer months their yards become popular
spots for their children's friends and
neighborhood kids. Taking the proper
precautions before anyone gets wet will
make accidents less likely to happen and
lets swimmers know that pool safety is an
important part of summer fun.
Always post your pool rules in large type
somewhere near the pool, so that all
swimmers can see them. Before you let kids
into the pool, review the rules with them.
The following rules will help you get started.
• Do not run on pool deck.
• Do not push people into the pool.
• Do not jump on others.
• No diving into an above-ground
pool.
• No diving into an inground pool
unless it has a deep diving area
(No one should dive into water
less than five feet deep; the
minimum depth for a diving
board is nine feet).
