t'elitlltl .tiHCiint,
PanamA, Julycf.'~ Advices from Salva-
dor state that a dreadful riot took place
at San Miguel, a town of 40,000 inhabi-
tants, in the southern part of the republio.
A great' deal of discontent lias been excit-
ed against the government by lis refusal
to allow a pastoru1;«(f the llishop of Salva-
dor—written in a tone hostile to the laws
—to be lead in the churches". There had
also been considerable hostile feeling
among the lower clauoos, owing to some
regulations requiring dealers to use a new
marketplace. While mutters were in this
condition, a priest, warned Palacio, preach-
ed a violent sermon' against the constitut-
ed authorities ou Sunday, tho 20 lilt. That
evening the mob arose, attacked thoCabi-
ioo, and liberated some 200 prisoners. They
then proceeded to assault the small guiri-
son, and took the Cuurtel. They killed
Generals Kspinosa anil Castro, cut tho
former to plccos, and threw the pieces at
each other, and split the skull of General
Castro, and threw him over a wall, where
ho was picked up by his mother a.cd died
in three days. The garrison wore nearly
all assassinated, and many prominent citi'
zous were killed. After this the fanatic
mab sot (ire to some sixteen houses with
kerosene. Before tho town was entiroly
destroye, it haypened that It. B. M. ship
Phantom was ut LaUuiou, when slio land-
ed her marines, which allowed the garison
there, nutted with some troops from Amu-
jiala, in Honduras, to march to the relief
of San Miguel and put down the mob. The
curate Palacios, at lust accounts, was ar-
rested with others that had participated
in the outbreak, and a good many of the
inferior riotors had boon shot by ordor of
President Gonzales, who had arrived with
troops. With the houses destroyed and
pillage, the damage is estimated at one
jiiillion dollars, aud commercial failures
are looked for in oonse((iionee. The coun-
try has been declared in a state of siege.
Gonzales is taking measures to establish
order, and bring the perpetrators of this
disgraceful outbreak to punishment. Tho
Viario, ollicial journal of the State, and all
the public prints abound in indignation
against tho parties who were the instiga-
tors of this savage and sanguinary allair
the Capelutar Vicar, tor the oilict publish-
ed by his ordor, and JoseManuol Palacios,
ez-Canonigo of the Cathedral of Sail Sul-
vabor. Tho municipality ot this city lifts
asked to havo said Palacios removed, but
Cueria EcctetfiiurtB has paid tig attention
to tho potitioil.' lio was oouliutially exci-
ting hatr«d between tho well-to-do class-
es, and the result lias been desoribed. One
.curious anil incredible discovery was made
after the murderous affair was over, aud
that was that ou the persons of Softie of
ihe'ilead robels were found passports which
/read, when translated, "Peter, open to tho
bearer the gatoB of heaven, who has died
for religion." (Signed) "(J'corge, Itishop
of San Salvador," and "sealed with the
«eal of tho Bishopric of San Salvador."
The Bostonian was a little dazed, hut ho
went down stairs whero he was received
with cheers. Ho interviewed by the
local editor; ho and his wife ^'ore shown
the Uoautics ol tho plaoe in tho host turn-
oat ill the placc ; and ho was sent on his
way rejoicing.—Boston Journal.
