Denison, Oct. 17, 1874.—Tho
testimony in thecaae of tho United
States vs. Rol»HOiH«ro is not yet
closed. Most of the day lias been
taken up in hearing the evidence of
W. W. Stone, who, it appears, is
one of the principal witnesses. He
in his testimony states:
I had been boarding at Thos.
Boyd's house: had been boarding
there a little over two weeks; 1
went from Civil's lSend, in Cook
county, Texas, to St. Joe, Montague
county ; 1 am a married man \ I
took my wife with mo from Civil's
Bend ; my wife's maiden name was
Anna D. Wilkenson; I had been
married about six weeks; I had
been to Sherman and St. Joe to
make arrangements with one Gra-
ver and Wyatt to work at their mill:
Wyatt was satisfied that I cotilu
get the job as soon as Craver re-
turned.
This was on.my first visit to St.
Joe, and upon this statement I
moved my family to St. Joe on or
about the 20th of September. I
was talking to Billy Robinson.
This was after these parties had
hung his brother. I told him he
could bring the parties to justice
by process of law for this action.
At or about this time Mr. Hays
called me up to his room and was
talking to me nbout an organization,
and wanted to know if I could not
belong to it. 1 told him I was op
posed to mob law. I was in favor
of the law taking its course in all
cases, and also caine near getting
in(o a difficulty by making the same
statement, viz: I was opposed to
mob law. in the streets the next
day I was talking to Mr. Hays He
told me that I hail been talking a
little too much. That he had heard
it whispered tluvt some of tho old
citizens were going to toko me out
and hang me, anil l>fl advised me
to leave the country as quick as 1
could get away. O'Uare told ine
the same thing. I told Messrs. O'
Hare and Hays that I had never
been driven away from any conn
try, anil 1 was not disposed to bo
driven from this. A night or two
after this, the 25th of September,
nfter I had gone to bed," some time
between ten and eleven o'clock-, I
heard a noise at my door. It was
an unnatural voice, it was a dis
guiseil voice. In fact, thoy said,
"Halloa." Mrs. Boyd spoke, and
tbe party asked if I Stone, was there
She told them I was. I then got
up, supposing it was tho mob. I
opened the door and saw a man
Kecoguizcd his clothing. This man
wasio mask. He said I wish to
talk with you. I stepped back,
closed the door, and said : Bob O'
Hare, I know you, and I have un-
derstood that a party were going to
take me out and hang me, and 1
don't propose to go out to inaskeil
men ; I do not propose to sell out."
They then commenced holloaing all
around the house, move out the wo-
man and children and strike a light,
O'Haie calling on me to come out
and I would not be hurt. I had
confidence in liini and went out. I
had got but fifteen or twenty feet
from the door with with my pis-
tols in hand, when they commenced
closing in around me, between me
and the house. Some of the party
then exclaimed, "We have got him."
O'Hare was at my side. I tried to
get back to tho house, and he put
his arms around me. I got away
from him and jumped back and
tried to get to the house. They all
pressed around and said, "shoot
him; stop him." I got into the
house and closed the door. 1 stood
in the center of the room and told
them 1 would k'ill the first man
that came in the boor. I rccogniz
ed O'Hare. He had been talking
to ine as a friend. He tried to get
me to come out.
