FRIDAY
—
BIG IMPORTANT DEADLINE
If you haven't signed up for
any classes yet: first off, Con-
grats! I hope you had a great
first week back. But more
importantly, sign up for
some before 5 p.m. today
or you'll be charged a Late
Registration fee.
SUNDAY
Have you ever wanted to play
inside someone?
It's like the Amazing Journey,
except with Elmo and Oscar!
This is your last chance to see
"Sesame Street Presents: The
Body!" at the Health Museum
(1515 Hermann Drive). You
can "run, jump and play your
way through a new interactive
exhibition all about the human
body." Sounds like fun, eh?

Lend me your ears!
KTRU DJ Night is tonight
at the Proletariat (903 Rich-
mond) starting at 10 p.m. It's
totally free, hosted by KTRU
and the Proletariat. It's 18 and
over only, though, so make
sure you're legal before you
put your dancing shoes on.
And wear your dancing shoes,
because that's totally cool.
Baker Comes First
We'll be seeing a red front
coming in through Pub this
fine Tuesday night. It should
arrive around 10 p.m. and
won't pass completely past
the campus until after
2 a.m. Things should be clear
by Wednesday morning.
Translation: Baker College
Pub Night; Tuesday
10 p.m.-2 a.m. at Willy's Pub
in the RMC basement. (Say
hi to the Lapist for me since
I won't be there.)
WEDNESDAY
Elementary, my dear Watson.
Many of you might be
intrigued at the mention of
Swiss physicist Lode Pol-
let's lecture on "Classical
Digital and Quantum Analog
Computations in Atomic
Physics," which is today
from 4-5 p.m. in Herzstein
210. He will speak on, and I
quote, "Cold atoms loaded
in an optical lattice offer a
unique opportunity to build a
quantum analog computer. I
will discuss the current
status of the experiments
on the Bose-Fermi Hubbard
model, which might serve as
a first quantum analog
computer for electron-
phonon interactions."
Love, Janls
The musical celebrating Janis
Joplin — who apparently is the
most famous person ever from
Port Arthur, Texas — will open
tonight at the Alley Theatre
in the Theater District. The
extensive biography charts
Joplin's life from 1966 until
her death in 1974. It's a family
favorite about sex, drugs, rock
and roll, music, conservative
Texans, and more! Showtimes
are typically 7:30 p.m. during
the week, with 2:30 p.m. mati-
nees on weekends and 8 p.m.
shows. "Cheap Thrills" tickets
are $21 for Sunday and Tues-
day evening shows. For more
info, go to wuiw.alleytheatre.org.

Dry by Drywest
Nir Y. Krakauer from UC
Berkeley will be giving a
lecture on global warming's
(if you believe in that sort of
thing) effect on the United
States in the future, titled
"Will This American Century
Be Dry? The Evidence of the
Observational Record." The
lecture will discuss dominant
opinions on the issue and
some alternative ideas. If
you believe in global warm-
ing, or want to listen to
someone who does and
(silently) laugh at them,
show up from 4-5 p.m. in
room 100 of the Geo Labs.
But be polite, because it's
not cool to ridicule people
in public. Even if you think
their opinions are naive and
ignorant and stifle the
progress of all humanity.
This guy Is awesome.
If you haven't met Bas
Poulos, it sucks to be you.
The newly-renamed VADA (Vi-
sual and Dramatic Arts) depart-
ment is showing "A Moment in
Time: The Art of Basilios Pou-
los 1975-2008" in the Main Gal-
lery of the Rice Media Center
(across from the Police station).
There will be a grand opening/
reception tonight from 6-8 p.m.
and the exhibit will remain on
display through Feb. 15th.
FRIDAY
48
BIG DEADLINES, ROUND TWO.
FIGHT!
David Tenney says: Today is
the last day. Fo' rilz. So do
these things. Specifically:
■ Last day for online course
registration
■ Last day to add a course
without instructor permission
■ Last day to convert a pass-
fail grade from the Fall 2007
semester
And your first RDA PIN (what
does RDA stand for, anyways?)
for Spring 2008 expires.
Dun dun DUN!
Who does this guy think he is?
The Rice Libertarians are
hosting a "Who is Ron
Paul?" luncheon today at
noon in the RMC's Farns-
worth Pavilion. Show up
for some pizza and learn
more about Texas
Congressman and presiden-
tial candidate Ron Paul.
You never know, someone
might even get worded while
you're there.
HOW TO SUBMIT
CALENDAR ITEMS
Deadline is Monday at 3 p.m.
prior to Friday publication.
Submission methods:
Fax: (713) 348-5238
E-mail: thresher-calendar@rice.edu
Campus Mail:
Calendar Editor
Thresher, MS-524
Submissions are printed on a
space available basis.
A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR:
Keep in mind that a new semes-
ter is a new opportunity to do all
those things you never got around
to last semester. It's a clean slate!
So you can do things like write
into the Thresher Calendar and get
your own ridiculous hijinx immor-
talized in glorious ink. To quote a
famous Thresher Calendar editor:
"What do you think print media
was invented for?" (Dec. 7, 2007).
Unforunately, this job isn't all fun
and games; there are a few points
of business to get around to in the
next 25 picas of text.
Firstly, Tim Drayna: Stop saying
"y'all." You're from Maryland/Cali-
fornia. Cut it out.
Secondly, welcome back GCock.
Thirdly, I think we should be saying
"Tertiarally" instead of thirdly; it's
just awesomer.
Fourthly/quaternally/numero
quatro: Shila, you are totarry awe-
some, and not just because you
send me sweet DVDA updates.
Keep up the good work. (And if you
really want to experience Christ-
mas, convert? Just a thought.)
Fifth, I have nothing else to say.
Except that if you've read this far,
you deserve something. So kudos
to you. Seriously. That's an im-
pressive attention span in today's
society. You should come work for
the Thresher.
Finally: Happy Belated Birthday to
Amanda. Psych. Next Friday.
I'm totally cereal.
