banking firms.
"The program is designed to appeal
to quantitatively oriented students like
mathematics, science and engineering
students, in addition to economics, sta-
tistics and managerial studies students,"
Ensor said.
Faculty Senate Chair Marj Corco-
ran said she favors the minors because
they give undergraduate students
more options.
"I hope that if we get enough minors
out there then people won't continue to
overload themselves with double and
triple majors," she said.
In May 2006 the Faculty Senate
approved a process for faculty to propose
minors. Interdepartmental minors like
the FCAM minor must be approved
by the Faculty Senate, but if individual
departments want to make their own
minors, they are able to do so without the
senate's approval.
The courses required for the FCAM
minor are ECON 211: Principles of
Economics I or ECON 370: Microeco-
nomics Theory; STAT 310: Probability
and Statistics: ECON 400: Econometrics
or STAT410: Introduction of Regression
and Statistical Computing: ECON 355:
Financial Markets or ECON 448: Corpo-
rate Finance; STAT 421: Computational
Finance II: AppliedTime Series Analysis;
ECON 449: Basics of Financial Engi-
neering; and STAT 486: Computational
Finance I: Market Models.
Wiess College junior Sean Wilkinson
has mixed feelings about the new FC AM
minor because he does not know what
the distinction is between a regular major
and a minor.
"It's a cool program because if you do
the work, you should get recognized for
it, and it's definitely a recognized field."
he said. "I know a lot of people that would
like to go into finance, so it's good for
them to have training and something to
say, 'I've had this training.'"
STUDENT ASSOCIATION
The Student Association met Monday. The following were discussed.
■ Student Association President Althea Tupper announced 100
Days will be Feb. 1 at Shadowbar and is open to all students.
Tupper, a Hanszen College senior, said students should send
nominations for the SA Mentor Award to sapres@rice.edu. Former
President Bill Clinton will speak at Autry Court Feb. 8 at 3 p.m.
Students who want to attend should bring student IDs.
■ SA Internal Vice President Laura Kelley announced the new
student representatives are looking for art submissions for their
project. Kelley, a Brown College junior, said the SA Environmental
Committee will sponsor Recycle-Mania. The committee's next
meeting will be Feb. 8 at lunch at the Hanszen College upper
commons.
The Sports Committee will sponsor work at Texas Children's
Hospital.
■ Thresher Opinion Editor Evan Mintz moved to amend paragraphs
ii, v and vi of SA By-Law E, Article B-2, section 2, subsection d.
Mintz, a Hanszen junior, said the changes would allow the
Thresher to publish information about candidates in student
elections without having to notify them 24 hours in advance and
provide 250 words of space for a response. Another amendment
would allow candidates to publish campaign Web sites without
using the SA Web site and would allow candidates to send bulk
campaign e-mails.
Mintz said the purpose of the amendments is to enable candi-
dates to clearly inform the student body of their goals.
Several senators and college presidents raised concerns that
the amendment would lead to unfairness in Thresher election
coverage. Others contended the current Bylaws inhibit freedom
of speech. Senators also said unrestricted campaign Web sites
and bulk campaign e-mails could give some candidates unfair
advantages.
The SA voted against breaking the proposal into seperate items
and will vote on the amendments Monday.
The next meeting will be Monday at 10 p.m. in the Farnsworth
Pavilion.
