THE RICE THRESHER SPORTS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21,2005
Halsey, Owls top Cougars in Austin
by Matt McCabe
THRESHER EDITORIAL STAFF
The swim team opened its season
with a pair of solid victories: the
first conventional, the second more
unorthodox.
First, Rice continued its domina-
tion of crosstown rival UH with a
3744 dual-meet win Friday in Austin,
despite conceding the points in the
diving events, in which the Owls
had no competitors.
Sophomore Amy Halsey came
on strong early, winning the 200-
yard individual medley with a time
of two minutes, 7.39 seconds, and
die 200-yard backstroke. For her
performance, Halsey was named the
first C-USA swimmer of the week for
die 2005-'06 season.

Searle will have his chance for a
rematch—both Gubser and Helge-
son will compete in this weekend's
regional tournament, along with
Texas Tech's 21st-ranked Bojan
Szumanski. Fifth-ranked Jerry Ma-
kowski, who eliminated Searle in
the ITA All-American Tournament's
round of 32 two weeks ago, will not
compete at regionals.
"If I play like I did last weekend
I know someone will have to play
really well to beat me, and that's
reassuring for me," Searle said. "I
know I've got [my game] straight
and I just have to keep the momen-
tum going."
In Midland, Searle also paired
with junior Ben Harknett to de-
feat Texas Christian University's
Rafael Abreu and Jacopo Tezza in
the quarterfinals of the doubles
bracket, before losing in the semi-
finals to eventual champions Roger
"Our returning swimmers did
pretty much as I expected, if not
better," head coach Seth Huston
said. "Amy really stepped up and
swam great."
Freshman Carlyann Voss Miller
led the newcomers with victories in
the 100 freestyle and the 200 free-
style. Freshman sprinter Diane Gu,
who ranked second among U.S. high
school seniors in the 50 freestyle
last year, had a strong showing in
the event, winning with a time of
23.83. Gu and Miller teamed with
senior Laura Healey and sophomore
Carey Hain to win the 400 freestyle
relay in 3:32.55.
Then Rice participated in the
more unusual Lake Travis Relays
Saturday, an open-water race cov-
ering about 12 miles. The Owls'
"A" team — composed of fresh-
man Caitlin Warner, Hain, Halsey,
sophomore Jennifer Hill, junior
Andrea Hum and senior Meg Brown
—finished first in the 24-team field,
winning by just 31 seconds.
Huston, who also swam in the
race, said the team faced tough
competition, including swimmers
no longer in college.
The relay swim was just some-
thing we wanted [to do] to get the
team to compete in a different en-
vironment," Huston said. "It ended
up that our 'A' relay team had quite
a race on their hands—almost four
hours of swimming and they only
won by 31 seconds."
Rice will host regional rival
North Texas Sunday at 10 a.m. at
the Rice Pool.
Matalonga and Daniel Andrus of
the University of Arizona in a 9-8
nail-biter.
"We played pretty well [in
doubles]," Harknett said. "We just
lost in the tiebreaker [because]
we didn't play as well as we had in
the previous few days. We're good
enough, but we just need to get
some more results."
In South Carolina, the rest of
the Owls had an excellent show-
ing. Knupfer won 10 consecutive
points to eliminate Wake Forest's
Liron Strauss in the semifinals
before defeating East Tennessee
State's Juan Crosa 6-2, 6-0 in the
championship match. He then
teamed with fellow sophomore
Hoony Shin to defeat North Flori-
da's Matias Sigal and Jose Tererra.
joining senior Rodrigo Gabriel and
junior Jason Mok in the all-Rice
doubles final.
Overall, the Owls are poised to
finish the fall season successfully.
After missing a large part of the
2004 fall season while recovering
from arthroscopic knee surgery,
Searle has an 8-3 singles record this
fall, with two of his losses coming
against ranked opponents.
"Basically, I was a bit sloppy
at the start of the semester, not
really focusing on what was going
on in the match," Searle said. "I
sharpened up a bit last weekend,
and if I'm focused it helps me to
win those big points."
Ustundag, however, said the
Owls are nowhere near achieving
their full potential.
"I feel that there's still plenty of
road to be traveled between now
and the spring," he said. "I think
we can still improve on every part
of our play — mentally, physically
and strategically."
