Hanszen students comment on
funding of Mardi Gras contest
HANSZEN, from Page 1
are doing it and it's just not a healthy
thing," Haubelt said.
Hanszen senior Kirstin
Engelhardt, who did return the form,
also said she thought the contest
wasn't a good idea.
"I just don't find it entertaining,"
Engelhardt said. "It's not something
I think people should receive money
for doing. I don't want to encourage
it."
Hanszen sophomore Geneva
Rliee, who did not return the form,
said she wasn't opposed to others
stripping even though she wouldn't
participate herself.
Hanszen senior Lyn Shepherd
said the stripping contest was only
part of the party.
"It's not a sex thing, it's a funny
thing," Shepherd said. "The fact is
you can still go to the party and enjoy
it without watching the stripping."
Hanszen junior Olen Rambow
suggested a new method for desig-
nating how college fees are spent.
"It might be a good idea to have a
form the other way around, so that if
people wanted their money to go to
the stripping contest, then they
would have a form," Rambow said.
At the beginning of each year,
Hanszen students already have the
option to declare they do not wish
their college fees to be used to pur-
chase alcohol.
Kellet said future Hanszen so-
cials will be able to decide whether
to continue giving students the op-
tion of withholding funds from the
party.
"This was totally our option — it
was not imposed on us by the RAs or
the masters or the cabinet or anyone
else," Kellet said. "This was com-
pletely our choice, so it will be the
choice of the future socials whether
or not they continue it."
Kellet said if an increased number
of students say they do not want their
fees to support the party in the future,
the format of the party could change.
"I would hope that if a majority of
the college voiced an opinion against
the party that whoever the socials
were at the time would know that
keeping the party the same would
not be the best of options," Kellett
said
' We felt that if you
didn't support the
stripping portion of the
party, then you
shouldn't have to
support the party at
all.'
— Pamela Kellett
Hanszen College social
Rambow said he was thankful for
the opportunity to keep his money
from supporting the party, but he
didn't plan to advocate its end.
"1 think there are too many people
that would like to keep it, so just in
the interest of maintaining peace I'm
not going to start a movement to try
to not have the party any more,"
Rambow said.
Haubelt said she thought the
party could retain its character with-
out the stripping contest.
"I think the Mardi Gras party is
just fine," Haubelt said. "I don't see
the purpose of having the stripping
contest in there at all except that it's
tradition."
