Dallas is the military city of Texas,
ller people have always been Avarlike.
In the early days her men were fore-
most in lighting the Indians. When
Texas put a regiment in the licld un-
der Col. Johnson for frontier protec-
tion the braves of Dallas tendered
their services to Gov. Houston to ex-
terminate them. The Dallas Light
Artillery under Capt. John J. (iood
rolled their two little mountain how*
itzers out in most menacing attitude.
When the secession convention was in
session this body of warriors werelirst
to tender their services to the work of
cleaning out the Unionists. \\ hen
the tight was waxing in Virginia they
planted the howitzers with ammuni-
tion in the (jiiiek sand of the'led riv-
er and called to the Indians to stand
waitie till they got to the battle lield.
During the war the regiments of
Guess and llurford and Darnall and
Stone covered the Confederate map
with their bloody tracks. Dallas
county had the great pistol factory un-
der the supervision of Lieut. Gf 'ruor
Crockett and made murderous , ( aP~
