THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
By John B. Meadows"Politically Correct or Historically Correct"
was the title of a speech given by
author Elmer Kelton at the 1994 annual
meeting of the Texas State Historical Association.
After following for the past several
months the turmoil created by the
Smithsonian Institute and its World War
II exhibit's ill-conceived attempt to revise
history, I can really appreciate the candid
but insightful content of Kelton's concerns. All too often we are confronted with
attempts by those who would change the
accounts of what happened in the past to
conform with what, in the minds of a few,
might be more politically or socially acceptable
behavior today. What this obviously
ignores is the fact that the events
written about did not occur today but happened
in the past when thoughts and circumstances were entirely
different.
A recent article in the Sons of the American Revolution
magazine dealt at length with the attempts and fallacies of those
persons drafting the new "National Standards for the United States
History". Their proposals would omit from history text, references
to Robert E. Lee, Daniel Webster, Paul Revere, and Thomas
Edison, but yet would include numerous references to McCarthyism
and the Ku Klux Klan. The misguided effort to misinform the
public and particularly our youth is appalling. Enough said. I would
urge you to read Kelton's speech and several other of his papers
recently published in "My Kind of Heroes" by the State House
Press.
This issue of HERITAGE magazine focuses on historic travel.
When I am in the planning stages of my excursions, I am always
mindful of the many opportunities to visit the historic sites along
the way. I am sure the articles we have included will generate
pleasant recollections of past journeys, spur you on to some others, and provide insight on how some communities
have benefitted from sharing their
historical resources.
This issue covers a diverse range of topics
including an article by Jan Hardin of the
San Marcos Convention and Visitors Bureau,
which recounts that town's success at
marketing their heritage to tourists. The
San Marcos Convention and Visitors Bureau
has worked side-by-side with the Heritage
Association of San Marcos in marketing
heritage tourism, and a related story
about that group tells how San Marcos
volunteers have helped keep local history
alive for tourists and locals. Marian Szurek
of the San Angelo CVB gives some practical
points for other towns to consider
when devising their marketing tourism
plan. Editor Gene Krane contributes an
article on "Historic Inns of Texas", stopovers that offer practical
alternatives to large hotels.
In other Foundation news, the Board of Directors traveled to
Tyler in January and had the opportunity to view several interesting
historical sites in that area of Texas. We were privileged to have
as our guide Lee Lawrence, past president of both the Texas
Historical Foundation and the Texas State Historical Association.
During the meeting, the Foundation Board awarded two grants to
deserving recipients involved in interesting preservation projects.
(See story on page 22 of this magazine.) The Foundation is also taking
an active role in the upcoming Preservation Conference, being
held this April in Austin. (Related story on page 22.)
Our Texas Historical Foundation, through its ongoing grants
program, continues to provide support for many worthwhile preservation
projects across the state. Your generous contributions are
greatly appreciated and help us reach more people who share our
common goal of preserving and honoring that which is Texas.
