LIBERTY BELL HEARD
BY TULIA FANS
For the first time in DO years
the Liberty Bell in Independence

in the new which was heard
throughout the United States
Radio carried the sound into countless

Mrs Kendrick wife of the mayor
brought tho gold hammer down
upon the bell thirteen times once
for each of the thirteen original
states When these had died away
she struck a 1920
The last time tho bell was heard
was on the occasion of the funeral
of tho Chief Justice John Marshall
in 1835 On that occasion the boll
was cracked and it was feared
that it would forever remain silent
The gold hammer used was
tipped with rubber but the reverberations
were pronounced by engineers
as SO per cent the full tone
ofX
In liiv the sound of the bell
was heard only a short distance
In 3926 the tones were heard allover
tliis country of ours

GREETINGS FOR 1D2G
hi nil the councils of men in all
deliberativebodies there is diver
sity of opinion Happy is any such
body whose individual membership
can lay aside potty jealousies
and selfinterest and with a single
ness of purpose serve its constituency
Such has been the attitude
of your present city officers
Certainly there was never a
heartier spirit of cooperation amore
earnest desire to serve the
best interest of the city nor amore
congenial collaboration than
has been manifest from the beginningWhile upon these has depended
in large measure whatever success
and achievements that are
ours yet ours would have been
but hopeless failure without the
splendid spirit of cooperating and
great big heartedness of the oii
tire citizenship Avho have been so
good to us from the first Certainly
no BCNCH has ever been
treated better than have wC
AVe have bad Mime criticism but
in the main it has been constructive
criticism for wbieb we thank
you We have also had possihiy
in a small way some destructive
criticism but not a word of censure
do we offer It is your affair
we are your servants
The vote on the paving project
is especially gratifying and such
expression on your part calls
forth our very best and we shall
put forth our very best efforts to
carry out your wishes to the best
interest of all If at any time any
citizen has a grievance do not hesitate
to make it known at THR
CITY OFFICE where every effort
will be made to serve you
And now as we bid the Old
Year Adieu with all its mistakes
shall we not look the New
Year squarely in the face grasp
the opportunities that are ours
and all make A LONG PULL
