352. Advanced Genetics (3). A study of the ways in which genes affect
the development and final form of plants, animals, and human beings
with particular emphasis on the physiological and biochemical methods
by which genes carry out their functions. Considerable emphasis
is also placed on the nature and mutation of genes. Prerequisites: Biology
351, and at least one year of chemistry.
353. Microbiology (2-3). A survey of the major groups of microorganisms
with special emphasis on bacteria. A study of the morphology, cultural
characteristics, staining tendencies, and biochemical activities of
representative forms with attention to those organisms of domestic,
industrial, and pathogenic significance. Prerequisites: six hours of
chemistry, eight hours of biology highly recommended, and junior
standing.
357. Plant Physiology (2-3). A study of the basic physiological principles
and functional activities of the vegetative and reproductive organs
of plants and how these may be affected by environmental factors.
Prerequisite: Biology 409 or equivalent.
362. Plant Ecology (2-3). Includes study of climatic and edaphic factors,
plant distribution, plant succession, methods of vegetation study with
emphasis on various types of environment, a study of the major
plant formations of the world with special emphasis on North America.365. General Entomology (2-3). A study of anatomy, physiology, development,
classification, economic importance and control of insects.
367. Plant Taxonomy (1-6). Introduction to the principles of classification
and herbarium techniques, with emphasis on local flora. Laboratory
work consists of collection, identification, and preparation of
herbarium materials. Prerequisite: Biology 409 or equivalent.
370. Field Zoology (2-3). Designed to acquaint students with representatives
of the major groups of animals of this region. Laboratory work
consists of collection, identification and preservation of local forms,
mainly. Especially recommended for prospective teachers of biology.
Prerequisites: Biology 411, 412 or equivalent.
380. General Histology (2-3). A detailed study of the microscopic structure
of the principal vertebrate tissues and organs with emphasis on
the distinctive characteristics of each. Prerequisite: Twelve hours of
biology.
381. Histological Technique (1-6). A study of the principles involved in
killing, fixing, preservation and further preparation of tissues for
making permanent microscope slides, with some attention given to
making of whole mounts and serial sections. Prerequisite: Twelve
hours of biology.
384. Embryology (2-3). Studies of experimental embryology, germ cells,
maturation, fertilization, cleavage, differentiation, and the early stages
of development of the frog, the chick, and the pig. Prerequisite: Biology
441.
388. Experimental EmSryology (2-3). Designed to acquaint the student
with the experimental approach to embryological problems. A survey
of the experimental work concerning the mechanisms responsible
for the processes of fertilization, cleavage, cellular and tissue differ
