Department of Chemistry
Director of Graduate Studies: Tommy McCord
The Department of Chemistry offers a program of advanced
study and research leading to the degree Master of Science. The professional
fields of specialization of the graduate faculty and their research
interests place emphasis on biochemistry and organic chemistry
in the course offerings and research activities of the department. In the
research program, particular attention is being directed toward specialized
investigations in the field of antimetabolities. The research
projects are being supported by grant funds from the college, the National
Institutes of Health, and the Robert A. Welch Foundation of
Houston, Texas.
Graduate students in chemistry may gain support from a number
of assistantships in both teaching and research which are made available
through College and grant funds.
Facilities for Graduate Study and Research
The Department of Chemistry is located in the three-story Otto
Foster Science Building which contains faculty offices, class rooms,
stockrooms, general laboratories for teaching, and specialized laboratories
for research.
The laboratories are adequately equipped with diverse facilities
for graduate research work in biochemistry and organic chemistry.
These laboratory accommodations provide rooms for organic syntheses,
microchemical and instrumental analyses, and microbiological assays.Specialized items of equipment include recording spectrophotometers
for the infrared visible and ultraviolet regions, a gas-liquid
chromatograph with recorder, a precision polarimeter, a radioactivity
counting system, low-pressure hydrogenation apparatus, Warburg apparatus,
Spinco paper electrophoresis apparatus with recording integrator,
a recording polarograph, automatic titrator and fraction collector,
ratio fluorometer with recorder, flame and emission spectrograph. The library of the College contains most of the recent domestic
chemical journals, important handbooks, monographs, and special
reference works. The library facilities are being improved continually
