373. Homiletics: The Preparation and Delivery of Sermons. The nature
and purpose of preaching are considered, along with the preacher's
qualifications and work. Major attention is given to the problems of
sermon organization and to the effective use of supporting details.
Practice is given in organizing and delivering short sermons. (Same
as Bible Pr. 393.)
374. Homiletics: The Preparation and Delivery of Sermons. Attention is
given to the problems of finding and preserving sermon ideas and
materials, with the emphasis on Biblical preaching. Various types of
sermons are studied, along with effective oral language and delivery.
Continued practice is given in preparing and delivering short sermons.

375. Advanced Public Speaking. A performance course aimed at achieving
excellence in the public speaking situation. It includes advanced
study of analysis of subjects, selection and arrangement of materials,
the psychology of the audience, and oral style. Practice is given in
both written and extemporaneous speaking.
376. Persuasion. A theory and performance course aimed at developing
both a philosophy and skill in persuasion. Includes classical concepts,
contemporary uses, and the ethics of persuasion. Students will be expected
to demonstrate that they can be responsible and effective motivators
of human conduct.
391. Studies in Ancient Public Address. A study of the outstanding speakers
and speeches of the ancient world, with historical background.
The emphasis is on Greek and Roman public address.
392. Studies in American Public Address. A study of the outstanding
speeches, speakers, and speech movements in American history. Emphasis
is placed on those speakers who made outstanding contributions
to our American heritage.
80G3. The History of Preaching. An advanced, critical view of preaching
as revealed in the light of its history. The review extends from New
Testament times to the present, with particular emphasis on outstanding
periods, trends, and men. (Same as Bible Practical 80G3.)
81G3. Advanced Studies in Homiletic Theory. An intensive study of the outstanding
materials in homiletic theory from Augustine to the modern
era. The study gives particular emphasis to developing trends,
and to the men and times responsible for them. (Same as Bible-Practical
81G3.)
85G3. Ancient and Medieval Rhetoric. A study of ancient and medieval
rhetorical theory. Outstanding works of classical writers are examined
as forces contributing to our present standards in the field of
speech.
86G3. British and American Rhetoric. A study of British and American contributions
to modern theories of public address.
87G3. Principles of Speech Criticism. A study of the development of standards
in speech criticism, and the application of those principles in
the critical evaluation of particular speeches and speakers. (Same as
