BACK TO THE BIBLE
gr
By H M BAGGARLY
A CHRISTOPHER NEWSLETER contributed
by a reader spotlights the tremendous
responsibility of the parent in the
institution we call home
There is no substitute for good parents
They have been particularly fitted by
God to draw out and channel into a useful
direction the bit of greatness which God
has implanted in every child He sends into
the world
When parents fail their children in this
respect these young lives remain aimless
incomplete and stunted Juvenile delinquency
more often than not is the result of being
unloved and unwanted
Parents who magnify what is good in
their sons and daughters automatically restrain
and diminish any tendencies toward
evil
So begins the letter
THOUGHTS FOR THURSDAY
THE FATHERS and mothers of America
have it within their power to change the
whole course of history from their 40 million
homes according to the writer God
intended that the home should be the greatest
school of all that young people should
receive from their parents above all others
the inspiration training direction and
sense of purpose which they must have in
order to lead useful lives When parents
neglect to unlock the power hidden in young
people and to direct it into constructive
channels their children often lead purposeless
incomplete and sometimes destructive
lives
THOUGHTS FOR THURSDAY
FIFTEEN TIPS are given for parents
of children Space prevents doing more than
barely mentioning them
GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO LIVE
FOR
Young people can accomplish great good
once they experience a sense of belonging
to a great and dynamic cause Nothing can
give them a greater sense of security and
purpose than the cause of Christ Once
they have this security then they can be
One of the most important words In the Eng
lish language is security
Beginning at birth the child yearns for the security
of his mother s arms and breast As he
grows older he must feel that his parents will provide
for his needs that his home will stand or he
will be insecure and maladjusted perhaps delinquent
As he reaches adulthood he seeks security for
his wife and family And he seeks spiritual as well
as material security As old age approaches his
primary want remains security He wants to know
that his needs will be provided in the sunset of
life He wants to know that he will have a minimum
of food clothing and shelter during his remaining
days on this earth and that there will
be another home awaiting beyond the grave
As a natieri we want security
Business wants security
toan companies demand it
Vet for some strange reason during the past
decade or so the word security has become a
dirty one It has been relegated to the company
of such words as socialism leftists and the
like The press last week reported that even such
a person as Dr D M Wiggins former college
dean and president now a city banker told a
meeting attended by one J Evetts Haley that the
dream of security has taken the place of the dream
of success He said there have been steps to remove
the chancetaking element from the lives of
Americans and attempts to replace that element
with a guarantee of success
What is security

What s Wrong With Security
Security is the inward knowledge that our min
imum needs will be provided that in event of misfortune
personal or collective we will be able to
survive with honor
Security is that which the school teacher feels
when he thinks of that time when he will be too
old to teach and remembers the small pension on
which he can count
Security is that which the old and unwanted
grandmother feels when she knows she will receive
30 to 40 a month after her husband has
left her with no material resources her children
have kicked her out and she has no one to whom
she can turn
Security is that which the business man feels
when he knows the business he has created through
the years will take care of him in his declining
years
Security is the belief that a bird in the hand
is worth two in the bush
The normal person would like to know that his
minimum needs will be provided not as a substitute
for the chance to be a Rockefeller or an
Einstein but as something to provide minimum needs
in case his attempts at success fail as they often do
But we have a cult today which would replace
security with chance To us that sounds much like
gambling Weve seen speculators win and weve
seen them lose Somehow we dont believe members
of this cult knew what It was like back In
1931 to receive that colored slip with a final paycheck
indicating a man no longer had a Job and
had no hope of getting another one His alternative
to let his children starve perhaps steal or
rob or beg for the crumbs that fell from some
bodys table We dont believe that they ever visited
one of the old fashioned poor houses where
thousands of oldsters spent their last days Like
Lyndon Johnson we dont believe these experiences
of poverty do anything constructive for the character
of a man or woman
Its easy for a city banker such as Dr Wig
of those who do not win first place and they
are the majority for a buffer against the pangs
of hunger
True the first place winners in this game of
life and perhaps one or two of their runners
up do not feel the need for a minimum pension
an annuity or something comparable But
basically they are just as dedicated to security
Gambling Is a wonderful profession for those who
win but for every winner there are many more
losers And It is this aspect of the trade that makes
gambling an evil
In our books the wise man Is he who seeks
security first whether it be for this world or the
next who never gambles more than he can afford
to lose and still survive in this game of life
The happy man is he who manages his affairs so
that in any event his needs will be supplied The
anxious fretful ulcerafflicted man Is he whose future
holds either rags or riches

JOHN POPE In Tho Qultnquo Post I had a
merchant tell me this week that he would not do
any more advertising in the Post unless I changed
my staff He made it a public issue so onco again
I must define tho principles on which this newspaper
is operated
As long as my name appears in this paper
as Editor it will be run as I see fit and I do
not sco fit to change my staff I pay them as long
as they do the job they are expected to do
Might I remind my friend tho disgruntled merchant
that my family of seven buys moro from
his place of business in a month than his advertising
bill will ordinarily run in six months And to stop
advertising what little ho docs cannot harm anyone
except himself The ultimate loss of business
for failure to advertise his products and the immediate
loss of seven customers may prove more
embarrassing when recorded on a bank statement
than his deleted page from our ledger
But of course you will want to know why he
justifies his actions
The former advertiser has a beef with
one of our shop help over an overdue bill of which
there Is a 3 balance He claims that I should pay
the bill and told my wife in a very loud voice
just what he thought of the boy and what he
thought of anyono who would work tho lad
What my employees do with their money is their
business We encourage them to bo honest pay
their just debts and not to make moro obligations
than they can meet But when Pop Clark sold the
youngster a watch I knew nothing of the transaction
A short time later I did know that the watch
would not run and had to be sent back to the
factory three times before it would give any service
at all The fact that a balance was owed on
the item was not mentioned to me until my wife
was rudely and throughly chewed out for the unpaid
bill
I do not think that anyone has threatened Pop
because he would not discharge some of his help
due to their buying and other habits while not on
the job Thats about as ridiculous a statement as
1vo heard
So we are resolved to go on in ignorant bliss
and pay our employees becauso they are hard working
and diligent and do a good job with limited
facilities
If that is wrong then I must admit my guilt

L A DUEWALL In The La Grange Journal US
Senator Ralph Yarborough has come up with a pretty
good argument as to why Secretary of Agriculture
Ezra Taft Benson should resign But It would appear
to the Journal that Benson has hide like an elephant
Nobody seems to be able to budge him
Some of the arguments advanced by Yarborough
are as follows
1 Benson has incited dissention between producer
groups of different farm commodities
2 Benson has depressed the prices received by
farmers for the products off all farms
3 Benson has carried on a propaganda campaign
in an effort to turn the American consumer against
the American farmers
4 Benson has tried to turn the farmers against
labor
5 Benson has centralized control of the farm program6 Benson has attempted to tear down the
Agricultural Conservation Practices Program
7 Benson is holding up use of 74V4 million dollars
in approved loans to REA Coops
8 Benson has recommended against credit to
develop the REA program
9 Benson has tried to reduce the Farmers Home
Administration
10 Benson has tried to eliminate the small
family type farm in America
These charges are by Texas Senator Ralph Yarborough
If half ore true Benson ought to bo ridden
out of Washington on sharpened saw
QUOTABLE QUOTES
HOMER STEEN in The Floyd County Hesperian
Floydada Although there may be disagreement on
some of the many reasons assigned In Senator Yar
boroughs resolution asking that the U S Senate call
for the resignation of Secretary Benson there cant
be much quarrel with at least two of the points
raised namely The Secretary has incited dissension
created ill will and stirred up war between
the producer groups of different farm commodities
and has turned the American consumers
against the American farmer Whether the secretary
intentionally did these two great wrongs to the
farmers and the producer the result has been the
same The Senator also calls attention to another
great error the secretary has made that is neglecting
even hampering the Rural Electric Administration
REA Is the greatest boon of tho era to the
people of the country and a man who does not
realize this fact should not bo kept at a high post
where he can be so injurious to the welfare of so
many people

GENE ALFORD in The Moore County News
Dumas Adjustment of a new school board docs
not always come easy There Is tho usual period
during which old members and new members become
acquainted in their ew role as school trustees
sitting around a tabl seeking solutions to public
school and not individual problems
Disagreements arc to be expected That is why
decisions are made by vote in which the opinion
of each trustee goes into the record As representatives
of the people each school board member
must feel that his vote expresses the wishes of those
who elected him to his office
This too Is why newspapers in their own role
of public watchdogs have an obligation to the public
to Ireep abreast of school board decisions
and to report who votes how
Our job s not made easy when we believe It
necessary to criticize vote action taken by our
school trustees especially before the new board
has hardly hsd time to function as a body
However we sincerely believe that action taken
Tuesday night jn selection of a new building contractor
to replaco the ousted Horn Construction
Company indicates a disturbing lack of harmony on
our school board
Our school board met for the express purpose
of opening seated bids with every intention of pulling
a fiick construction program out of the hat in
time to get the ball rolling before next school term
Three bids were submitted one surprisingly
low The decision then apparently was one of simply
selecting tho firm to complete the construction job
In question
The meeting instead turned into a confused
and disorganized squabble during which a formal
motion was made by a new school board member
which tho Horn Construction Company was pulled
off the job
The Horn dispute considered at great length
some time ago by members of the former board
of trustees came to a head after fegal counsel and
representatives of the bonding company involved in
the Job had advised the school board to take the
action they took The board finally took official action
in canceling Horns contract when they became
convinced tho mans firm was financially un
ablo to complete the job
Now after our school construction had appeared
to be headed for brighter days comes a postmortem
crusade which as we see it can accomplish
absolutely nothing except further delay
in completion of our badlyneeded school facilities
and continued discord among members of tho
school board
For gosh sakes gentlemen how about taking
another crack at this thing together There
are a lot of slobs like us who are depending on
your intelligent decisions final and official
decisions Wo would guess that you have enough
NEW problems to keep you from digging into the
past and exhuming old ones
