Aims and Purposes
The philosophy and aims of Howard Payne College are based
on the belief that God created man with a spiritual, a mental, a
social, and a physical nature. The chief aim of the college is to
help the students to achieve their full potential within the framework
of this concept of the dignity of a personality and the freedom
of the human spirit.
The college, a private, Baptist institution, believes that this philosophy
cannot be carried out nor the aim achieved without the
student's trust in Christ as a Saviour and his acceptance of God as
Lord and Heavenly Father. The definite purpose of Howard Payne
is to provide the environment, facilities, direction, and the inspiration
which will enable each student to relate himself to God in
such a way that he will know and do God's will consistently.
The college seeks to provide a quality education which will enable
the student to think clearly, independently, accurately, and
nobly so that he is able to meet not only the problems of his life
but also contribute to a better place in this world for all mankind.
His ability to do constructive and creative thinking includes a
thorough mental development and a sufficient acquisition of knowledge
for adequate mastery in the various spheres of life, all of
which are dedicated to God's service.
The prime objective of the school is a liberal arts education with
sufficient specialization to provide background and limited professional
training for dedicated young people in our world today.26
