BULLETIN OF HOWARD PAYNE COLLEGE
denominational meetings are conducted at the camp. Howard Payne
College organizations have use of the grounds for their meetings.
A very efficient system of public schools is maintained within
the city. Included in the Brownwood school district are eight
elementary schools, a junior high school, and a senior high school.
Daniel Baker College, a co-educational institution also located here,
was merged with Howard Payne College in a combined educational
program on February 1, 1953.
CAMPUSES
Howard Payne College Campus. The main campus contains
some 25 acres on Center, Austin and Fisk Avenues, main thoroughfares
of the city. The Howard Payne campus has been enlarged in
recent years by the addition of a number of adjoining city lots. A
25-acre stadium site has been acquired on the Brady Highway, a
short distance from the college. Fisk Avenue Park, practice field for
the Yellow Jacket football team, lies between Fisk and Brady
avenues, only a short walk from the main campus.
Daniel Baker College Campus. Daniel Baker College, merged
with Howard Payne College in 1953, has a campus of some 15
acres on Austin and Coggin Avenues, only a few blocks from the
Howard Payne campus. Daniel Baker Park, athletic field, is located
on Austin Avenue about midway between the Howard Payne and
Daniel Baker campuses.
PHYSICAL RESOURCES
Physical resources of Howard Payne and Daniel Baker colleges
include:
Howard Payne College Main Building. Towering over Howard
Payne's graceful, modern buildings is the 71-year-old Main Building,
a massive three-story stone structure which has undergone
extensive renovation in recent years. It provides much of the
college's classroom space and houses the school's Teacher Education
Curriculum Library. Offices for academic dean, business manager,
registrar, director of properties, dean of women and dean of students
are also located here.
Daniel Baker College Main Building. Daniel Baker College's
old stone Main Building, with its beautiful pointed spires, was
erected by Dr. B. T. McClelland, the founder of the college, in
1890. This structure is one of Texas' most interesting buildings.30
