BULLETIN OF HOWARD PAYNE COLLEGE
Street to be used as a religion center. This gift was matched by
friends of the college for a total of $100,000. On November 11,
1960, this building was formally dedicated in a most impressive
service. Offices for the faculty of the Division of Religion, the
Director of Religious Activities and the Executive secretary of
District 16 are located there. Ample classroom space, banquet
facilities, conference rooms, a beautiful sanctuary and the outstanding
Sterling Hogan Prayer Chapel complete the facilities in
the center.
The Walker Memorial Library building, named for John Allen
Walker and Mrs. Elizabeth Walker, was opened in the Fall of
1952. In addition to the Library, the President's and Administrative
Vice-President's offices are on the first floor and the President
emeritus and several faculty offices and class-rooms are on the
second floor.
Walker and McClelland Memorial Libraries contain approximately
65,000 volumes and regularly receive about 325 periodicals
and newspapers. There are also microfilm and record collections
including music, speech, literature and some languages. The following
are the named gifts and memorial collections: John D. Robnett,
Wade D. Vinson sociology and theology, Betty Shelton historical,
J. H. Grove and Roxy Grove music, Jewell Daughety, the Brown
County Papers, Clarence A. Morton, Dr. and Mrs. J. W. McCarver
Bible and philosophy, Sallie Neff Calvert, Mr. and Mrs. Jene
Wagner, H. O. Kelly, Shurman, Leslie Boone, Dr. O. E. Winebrenner,
Dr. M. E. Davis and the Boenicke Museum.
In addition to the Central library there is an Education library
located in the Administration Building, with approximately 3,000
volumes. In the Fleming Bible Center there is a nucleus of religious
books and a limited departmental science library is planned for
the new science building. Coggin Chapel contains a very large
records library.
FINANCIAL RESOURCES
Financial resources of Howard Payne and Daniel Baker college
include the following endowments:
The Walker Endowment. The late Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Walker
gave during their lives a half million dollars to Howard Payne College
for buildings, equipment and endowment. Under the will of
Mr. Walker a trust fund of one million dollars for endowment was
created.36
