BULLETIN OF HOWARD PAYNE COLLEGE
Democracy-in-Action Award. During the annual Democracyin-Action
Week awards are made to three faculty members who
contribute reviews, criticisms or evaluations of a given selection of
literature.
STUDENTS HONORS
Annual Achievement Awards. All divisional and departmental
awards for excellence in achievement, creativeness, and performance
are given during chapel period in May. Students are recommended
for Honors Day Awards by the faculty members in
whose departments they show particular ability and effort.
Democracy-in-Action Awards. Student awards are made annually
for contributions based on a patriotic topic. Original entries in
the area of themes, poetry, short stories, resource units, oratory,
sermons, posters and musical compositions are evaluated. These
awards are a part of our entire DIA program and are made possible
by generous grants from the Texas Education Association
and the Texas Bureau for Economic Understanding.
Vinson Ministerial Award. Mr. Truett Vinson and Miss Lena
Vinson offer annually a Biblical Commentary to the ordained Baptist
minister having the highest scholastic standing of all ordained
Baptist ministers of the senior class. To be eligible for the award
the minister must have an average of B on the regular required
course load per semester, and must be a member of the senior class.
The award will be made on commencement day in the spring of
each year.
STUDENT PERSONNEL SERVICES
An integrated program of student services is coordinated through
the Division of Student Personnel Services. Satisfactory student
growth is the prime purpose. This program attempts to make
guidance an integral part of the total educational program.
COUNSELING SERVICE. Howard Payne has expanded the
scope of its services in the past years, reflecting an awareness of
the significance of an adequate counseling center.
The counseling service has as its general function the administration
of guidance in the following areas: (1) the selection of
major study; (2) the effective application of abilities to allow for
maximum learning in college; (3) the diagnosis of difficulties and
the suggestion of remedial procedures needed; (4) personality adjustment
problems; (5) the selection of appropriate vocational
area.39
