BULLETIN OF HOWARD PAYNE COLLEGE
ENGLISH 101 AND 102. INTRODUCTORY COLLEGE ENGLISH. Study
of the English language for the purpose of securing correct oral and
written expression. There will be much outside reading and frequent
themes. Required of all freshmen.
Prerequisite: English 101 for English 102. Six semester hours.
ENGLISH 201 AND 202. HISTORY OF ENGLISH LITERATURE. The
first half of this course begins with the study of the Anglo Saxon
Period and extends to the Romantic Period. The second half of the
course includes a survey of English literature beginning with the
Romantic movement and extending to the literature of the present
time.
Prerequisite: English 101 and 102. Six semester hours.
ENGLISH 301. THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH DRAMA. A study
will be made of the English drama from the beginning to the contemporary
period. The historical background and plays of each
type and period will be studied.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 302. SHAKESPEARE. This is the study of Shakespeare's
plays by types. One type will be chosen each time the course is given
and an intensive study will be made of all plays in that type.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 303. TENNYSON. The major and minor poetry of
Tennyson will be studied, with special emphasis on "In Memoriam"
and "The Idylls of the King."
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 305. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ENGLISH NOVEL. A
study of the growth of the English novel from the Arthurian Romance
to the novel of the present day will be made. Specimens of
each period of development will be studied.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 306. THE CRAFT OF TIIE SHORT STORY. A study of the
technical devices and mechanics of the short story from the reading
of stories and from practice in writing.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 401. ADVANCED GRAMMAR. This is a detailed study of
technical English grammar. The course will be taught as formal
grammar.
