BULLETIN OF HOWARD PAYNE COLLEGE
ENGLISH 402. ADVANCED RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION. This is
a course in the practical application of the rules of grammar and
of the principles of composition and rhetoric. There will be a detailed
examination of the forms of expression used by the best
writers.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202 Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 403. AMERICAN LITERATURE. This course begins with
the study of early American literature and extends to Longfellow.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 404. AMERICAN LITERATURE. This course begins with
Longfellow and extends to the present.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 405. CONTEMPORARY DRAMA. This is a study of the
leading recent dramas of all countries.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 406. CONTEMPORARY POETRY. A study will be made of
the poetry of Masefield, Fletcher, Brooke, Hardy, and other British
poets. Many American modern poets, including Frost, Sandburg,
Robinson, Amy Lowell, Sara Teasdale, and Edna St. Vincent Millay
will also be studied.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 407. THE ROMANTIC MOVEMENT. A study will be
made of the background material of the period. A careful study
will be made of the work and influence of Wordsworth, Coleridge,
Scott, Byron, Shelley, and Keats.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 408. THE VICTORIAN PERIOD. This is a study of both
poetry and prose of the period.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 409. ELIZABETHAN DRAMA. This is a survey study of
the Elizabethan Drama with the exception of Shakespeare. The
major dramatists of the period with their works and influence will
be studied.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 410. THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH IN HIGH SCHOOL.
A study will be made of some effective methods employed in successful
schools. There will be a review of materials required and of
classroom practice and demonstration.
