BULLETIN OF HOWARD PAYNE COLLEGE
ENGLISH 411. BROWNING. The major and minor poetry of
Browning will be studied, with special emphasis on "The Ring and
the Book", the dramatic monologue and narrative poems.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 413. CAVALIER AND PURITAN PERIOD. This course involves
the background material of the Cavalier and Puritan Period.
It gives a general survey of the Cavalier writers and an intensive
study of Bunyan and Milton.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 414. CHILDREN'S LITERATURE. A survey of the literature
for primary and elementary levels.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 415. CONTEMPORARY NOVEL. This is a study of the
novel writers since 1900.
Prerequisite: English 101, 102, 201, 202. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 501. WORLD LITERATURE. This is a study of the best of
the world's literature, beginning with Greek and Roman literature
and tracing the development of literature to the present day. Specimens
of various literature will be studied.
Prerequisite: Graduate standing. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 502. HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. Consideration
is given in this course to the influences of the older languages
and the foreign languages on English. Modern language and its development
are also studied.
Prerequisite: Graduate standing. Three semester hours.
ENGLISH 512. SHAKESPEARE. A general study of Shakespeare's
plays. The principal plays from each type will be studied intensively.
Prerequisite: Graduate standing. Three semester hours.
