BULLETIN OF HOWARD PAYNE COLLEGE
Since the entrance requirements for professional schools vary,
the student is urged to consult with the chairman of the division
concerning the program of study which should be followed while at
Howard Payne College.
Science-Mathematics Degree Requirements
All degrees granted by Howard Payne College require work in
the science-mathematics area. It is expected that graduates of
Howard Payne have a general knowledge of science and mathematics,
including arithmetic, elementary algebra, and elementary
geometry. Since it is possible to meet the science-mathematics degree
requirements without college work in mathematics, a mathematics
placement test is administered to entering students below
senior standing. Those found deficient must absolve the deficiency
either by satisfactory completion of Mathematics 10 or by a satisfactory
score on a special re-examination.
In order that students may absolve any deficiency early in their
college training, remedial work in mathematics must be undertaken
prior to the time, or at the same time that science courses are first
scheduled. After completing six hours of work in science, students
will not be permitted to enroll for additional hours in science unless
the mathematics deficiency has been removed.
Comprehensive Major
The following comprehensive major program is offered by the
division. It may be counted as the major and minor on the
Bachelor of Arts degree, or the teaching major and minor on the
Bachelor of Science degree with major in secondary education. This
major is especially designed for pre-medical students and prospective
teachers of high school science. This major requires:
1. A minimum of six semester hours in mathematics and eight
semester hours in each of the sciences, biology, chemistry,
and physics.
2. Twenty-four semester hours in one of the three sciences,
biology, chemistry or physics.
3. Sixteen semester hours in another of the three sciences, or in
mathematics.
Comprehensive Minor
Available only for students with a major in elementary education,
the Division offers a comprehensive minor program of twentyone
semester hours.92
