BULLETIN OF HOWARD PAYNE COLLEGE
The minor consists of the following courses:
Biology 100 6 semester hours
Science 301-2 6 semester hours
Mathematics 131 3 semester hours
Advanced hours 6 semester hours
Mathematics 300, College Arithmetic, and Science 310, General
Science, are suggested for the six advanced hours, although any
advanced course in biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics is
acceptable.
DIVISIONAL COURSES
SCIENCE 301-302. PHYSICAL SCIENCE. A course seeking to develop
an understanding of scientific advances through experimental
observation and theoretical concepts, the relation of science through
other fields of learning, and the inherent limitations of science. A
unified treatment of fundamental concepts in astronomy, physics,
chemistry, and geology are presented. First semester topics are predominately
from astronomy and physics. Second semester work is
predominantly chemistry, atomic physics, and geology. Two hours
lecture and a two hour laboratory period weekly. Students with
credit in Chemistry 101 or Physics 101 may not take this course
for credit.
Prerequisite: Six hours Biology or Mathematics.
Three semester hours each course.
SCIENCE 310. GENERAL SCIENCE. Enrollment restricted to elementary
education majors. A course designed to give the elementary
education major an insight into scientific principles, concepts, and
modern developments which may be taught to children. Offered on
demand.
Prerequisite: Biology 100, Science 301-2. Three semester hours.
SCIENCE 414. TEACHING SCIENCE IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOLS.
A study of effective methods of science teaching in the secondary
school, with the philosophy underlying the methods.
Prerequisite: Junior standing as a science major.
Three semester hours.
SCIENCE 500. SCIENCE FOR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS. An inservice
course for high school teachers. Three semester hours credit
may be granted for the work of one semester, if approved by the
instructor.
Prerequisite: Acceptance by Science Institute. Six semester hours.93
