MUSIC 4213. FORM AND ANALYSIS.
A study of the structure of music; motif and phrase, lied, rondo, variation, sonata and programatic
forms. Spring, odd years.
Prerequisite: Music.2223. Two semester hours
MUSIC 4233. SEMINAR IN 20TH CENTURY MUSIC.
The teaching of the basics of analysis of 20th century music and a survey of important composers
and their works. Extensive listening will be assigned. Fall.

MUSIC 4243. ADVANCED COMPOSITION.
Free composition in advanced styles and for larger ensembles. Offered on demand.

A study of the principles of orchestration. The course is designed also for original productiveness
in the instrumental areas of composition. Spring, even years.

MUSIC 1353. MUSIC APPRECIATION.
A general music survey course designed to acquaint students with the principal composers,
forms and characteristics of the various periods in music. Fall, spring, summer.
Prerequisite: None. Three semester hours
MUSIC 1254. INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC LITERATURE.
A survey of the major style periods, and representative composers and compositions in the
musical traditions of Western Civilization. Fall.
Prerequisite: None. Two semester hours
MUSIC 3353. HISTORY OF MUSIC AND LITERATURE I.
An intensive study of the history of music and representative music literature before 1750. Fall.
Prerequisite: Junior standing. Three semester hours
MUSIC 3363. HISTORY OF MUSIC AND LITERATURE II.
An intensive study of the history of music and representative literature from 1750 to the present.
Spring.
Prerequisite: Junior standing. Three semester hours
MUSIC 4214. ORGAN LITERATURE.
A study of the literature for the organ and its development, including composition styles and
performance practices, from the fourteenth ceritury to the present. Fall, odd years.
Prerequisite: Music 3353, 3363 and Junior
standing in Theory and Applied Organ Two semester hours
MUSIC 4224. PIANO LITERATURE.
A study of solo piano literature from the Middle Ages to the present. Special emphasis will be
placed on harpsicord literature of the Baroque as well as the solo repertoire of the Classic, Romantic,
Impressionistic and Modern schools. Attention given to compositional forms and performance
practices of each period. Fall, odd years.
