Social Sciences
Option II. Social Work. Students planning a career in human services or related areas such as
health, family services or work with the aged will choose this option. Application to this program
should be made not later than the first semester of the sophomore year. Upon acceptance into the
program, the faculty advisor will assist the student in structuring his course of study in keeping
with guidelines established by the Council on Social Work Education. Specific courses in
Sociology and Social Work will form the core of the program enhanced by related courses from
various departments in the university. The Director of the Social Work Program should be consulted
for further information. Thirty-three semester hours, twelve of which must be in Field
Placement I and II, are required for a core in the Social Work option.
Honor students in the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom may choose the Social Service
Path as their area of concentration. See the Academy of Freedom section of this bulletin for
details.
Sociology is also an approved teaching field for both elementary and secondary school teachers.

Sociology
SOCIOLOGY 1101-4609. SPECIAL STUDIES.
Topics offered as demand reflects an interest in areas of Sociology not covered by existing
catalog courses. Course may be repeated when topic of study changes. As announced.
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. One to three semester hours
SOCIOLOGY 1311. INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY.
An introduction to the study of society and the basic concepts of Sociology. Fall, spring.
Prerequisite: None. Three semester hours
SOCIOLOGY 1321. PROBLEMS OF CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY.
An examination of major social problems of modern Western society, including issues of racial
conflict, war, civil rights, social movements, the mass media, crime and mental illness. The topics
will vary from year to year depending upon the instructor. Fall.
Prerequisite: None. Three semester hours
SOCIOLOGY 1331. INTRODUCTION TO ANTHROPOLOGY.
An introduction to the study of the divisions and concepts of Anthropology including cultural,
physical, ethnology, ethnography and archaeology. Spring odd years.
Prerequisite: None. Three semester hours
SOCIOLOGY 2321. CRIMINOLOGY. (Formerly Sociology 3321.)
An introduction to the study of crime including an overview of the history and development of
the criminal justice system, theories concerning the causes and prevention of crime, and the functioning
of the law enforcement system, the judicial system and the penal system. Spring even
years.
Prerequisite: Sociology 1311 or consent of instructor. Three semester hours
SOCIOLOGY 3301. URBAN SOCIOLOGY.
A study of historic and contemporary urban social structures. The use of the city, its ecology
and place in contemporary society. The nature and types of city dwellers. Urban-rural trends. Fall
odd years.
Prerequisite: Sociology 1311 or consent of instructor. Three semester hours
SOCIOLOGY 3302. RURAL SOCIOLOGY.
A study of the physical environment, spatial patterns, biosocial basis, social interaction and
social institutions of rural America. Spring even years.
