VICTORIA.
The Result of the Recent rrlmarle,—Wed-
ding or a Popular Coople.
ViCTor.iA, Tex., July 21.—From informa-
tion received from other localities tho im-
pression nppears to have been conveyed by
the dispatches sent from here on tho 14th
Instant that ourcounty convention was held
on that date and had instructed for Cook
for governor. This is a mistake. The pri-
maries wore held on the 14th instant, and
out of fourteen precincts in the county four
instructed for Hogg, one for Cook and nine
were uninstructed.
Mr. Fred Hencks of this city and Mi#s
Allie lift yea of Garcitas were married to-
day and left on a wedding tour for Niagara
Falls and other northern resorts. The
gloom is a rising young business man of
our town, wh'le the bride is a member of a
wealthy and influential county family. A
laree party of friends accompanied the
happy coople a short distance on their
Journey.
COUNTY SEAT OF GRIMES.
The Election to Determine Between Ander-
son and Navasota—The ltesult.
Navabota, Tex., July 21.—To-day was
election day to decide if Navasota or Ander-
son should be the county seat of Grimes
county, the court house at Anderson having
been burned some time ago.
The people of Navasota offered to build a
court house an8 jail without cost to the
couutv. Reports from nil over the county
gave Navasota the court house without a
shadow of a doubt. In some precincts
where Auderso.i expected a majority Nava-
sota received four to one. The people here
f!ave a barbecue which was attended by a
arge number of people. There was not a
■ingle light during the day.

Assailants ati'l Gets 85000.
Lebanon, Ind., July 21.—Marlon Kendall,
• married man, who lived at ESizaville, this
county, four years ago and who was charged
with assaulting u young girl, was taken out
by whitecaps one night, tied to a post and
beaten into insensibility. He partially re-
covered a suit for *10,000 damages against
five of his assailants who were respected
citizens of this caurity.
Judgment was given for 15000. The de-
fendants carried the case to the supreme
court but a decision handed down from that
body last week affirms the Judgment of tho
lower court. _
Timber Depredations.
St. Paul, Minn., July21.— Uncle Sam has
at last awakened to the fact that his timber
bonanza on the northern boundary of Mins
nesota has been and is still being despoiled
by Canadian thieves, who have stolen mill-
ions of feet of tlmbe? from under the very
eyes of the American officers. To bring
these Canadian thieves to justice is the aim
of Secretary Noble, who has organized a
commission to investigate the extent of in»
juries in the territory named.
The expedition will be headed by four
agents especially selected from the govern-
ment staif for this work, and with them
will be a considerable force of assistants.
They will he clothed with authority of
deputy United States marshals, and em-
powered to make seizures of government
timber if necessary. The expedition will
be started out fiom Duluth on or about
August 11, and will head in a northerly
direction, its destination being Haiuy lake.
A New Episcopal See.
New York, July 21.—The Rome corre«
spondent of the Catholic News writes that
the pope has approved the decision Ol the
sacred congregation of the propaganda
which divides the present diocese of Galves-
ton, erecting therefrom a new episcopal see,
that of Dallas, which will embrace the en-
tire northern portion of the former bishop-
ric of Galveston, embracing 108,000 square
miles, with twenty cities and about 1S.0C0
Catholics, served by seventeen priests of
different nationalities.
The new see, the titular of whicb has not
yet been appointed, possesses already, it is
■aid, twenty-eight churches.
Killed by Highwaymen.
■Wheeling, W. Va., July 20. —[Special]—
John Watkins, a retired flour mill owner,
died at his residence in Bridgeport last
night from injuries inflicted by two high-
waymen a short time since. Watkins was
on his way home when Eddie Coombs and
"Bull" McConnougb. two notorious toughs,
attacked him and beat him in a shocking
manner. The highwaymen escaped, but
were arrested, tried and convicted, but
while in the St. Clairsville jail awaiting
transportation a crowd of toughs from this
city went out, broke open the jail and re-
leased all the prisoners. McConnougb and
Coombs, who are now wanted for murder,
•re still at large.

X>eath of a "Well Known Hotel Proprietor—
The Telephone Company Opposed to tho
Use of Electricity by tho street Hall-
way—A lionded "Warehouse.
San Antonio, Tex., July 21.—Colonel J.
N. Baker, proprietor of the Central hotel
on Main plaza and an old citizen of this
place, dropped dead from the effects of
heart disease at 5 o'clock this morning, im-
mediately after rising from his bed. Colonel
Baker was born in Monroe county, Tenn.,
and wes 65 years old. He cumo here neurly
twenty-five years ago and has been in the
hotel business ever since. He leaves a wife
and seven children, nearly all grown,
Colonel Baker has frequently expressed a
wish that when death called him it might
be suddenly and painlessly, and in this he
had his desire.
Bessie Spiegle, a young woman 17
years old, was fished out of the river last
night in an unconscious condition by n man
fishing upon the bank. By hetoic efforts
she was restored to consciousness, and then
she deplored her failure to end her life.
She said she intended to commit suicide,
but her foot slipped on the bank us she
Btarted to jump and sbo fell instead of
plunging Into the stream. She was taken
home and will recover. Disappointment in
love was the cause of her desire to end her
life.
The proposed introduction of electric
motors by the street railway companies
here is about to encounter the opposition of
the Erie Telegraph and Telephonecompany,
which has hundreds of wires stretched
through the streets of the city. Messrs.
Ba,,er and Dunbar, who represent the Erie
company, are now here and they state it is
the intention of their compauy to oppose
tho erection and operation of electric street
railways in this city. These gentlemen
stated that they are instructed by their
principals to petitiou the courts for an in-
junction against all parallel electric linos
or cross lines that may be
erected or contemplated. A confer-
ence has been had with Mr. Weiss,
superintendent of the City Street Railway
compscy. The letter states 'hat no definite
understanding was reached, but that the
Erie company seemed fearrul that thestreet
railway companies would ruin their wires
and destroy their business. He claimed,
however, that they could not enjoin until
the rollway wires were erected and the Erie
compmy could show canse for an injunc-,
tion, and hejfelt that in snch eveut the
street railway company would win the
fight. He relies upon the good wishes of the
people of this place, who have for a long
time execrated the miserable mule power
service given by the street railway com-
pany, and stiud ready to welcome any
change as a relief.
The city council, aroused hy complaints
of poisonous milk being sold here, passed
an ordinance this evening, to take effect
upon publication, to provide for the quar-
terly inspection of cows whose milk is sold
in the market.
Collector of Customs F. A. Vaugban of
this district, who is here to day, says that a
bonded warehouse will be established aud
ready lor business inside of sixty days.
