NEW YORK ADVANCES OCEAN RATES
FOR GRAIN.
The Amount of Cotton on Shipboard In-
creasing— Only One Clearance Yester-
day—Late Steamship Arri-
vals — Notes. ~
The various continental steamship lines,
Including the Red Star, North German
Lloyd, Hamburg-American Packet com*
pany, Netheilands-Aaierican, French line
and the different Italian lines, says the
New York Star of last Sunday, issued a
notice yesterday afternoon to the effect that
hereafter they will not accept grain for less
than 3 pence per bushel unless it is needed
for ballast, in which case it will be taken at
the usual market rates, which is now 1%
ponce.
Mr. Hennessy of the Red Star line said
that the sudden advance was not due to
any resolution of the continental confer-
ence, nor was it a concerted movement.
Each line acted independently in the
matter. They were forced to take the
atep, as they were losing money by taking
grain at the market rates. He thought that
the change ?vould not affact the grain trade,
except when certain grades wore wanted at
once on the other side. In general grain
would be transported in ballast, thus avoid-
ing the higher rate.
The freight manager of the North Ger-
man Lloyd line did not agree with this view
of the matter. He thought that the export
trade wonld be seriously affected, and said
that the prices on the continent and in this
country were so nearly alike that the ship-
pers could not afford to send it oyer at 3
pence per busheLw He claimed, however,
that the steamship companies could not
afford to take it at any lower price, as their
actual cash outlay for the handling of
grain amounted to 2 cents per bushel. He
aaid also that while his company would
continue to take grain as ballast at the
market price, he should, for any amount
after the ballast was secured, charge 3
pence per bushel, and more if he could
get it
Cotton on Shipboard.

terday morning as officially bulletined by
the exchange was distributed as follows:

The Skippers Woes.
lOrlglnally printed in a Lelth, (Scotland)
newspaper, and republished by request.]
Have pity, ye marine and local boards.
Ye little magnates-yea, most mighty lords—
On the poor skipper, for his lot is cast
Where lato unkind pursues him to the last.
Alas! poor man, his is an evil plight.
He's always wrong, he's never in the right.
Upon him. like n scapegoat, must be thrown.
The faults of other*, not to say his own;
Disaster comes, and tho' 'twas not. his fault.
" *Tis plain the fellow is not worth his salt."
Should togs or currents put his reckoning out.
At once they ask: "What was the fooi about?"
His ship is wrecked, or by collision sunk:
Of course he has to prove he wasn't drunk.
If freights are low— who but himself to blame?
.lack's duff it spoiled, at once he says the same:
The beef all bone and innocent of fat.
Who but the sklpiier is to blame for that?
He shortens sail on some dark stormy night,
Jock growls, and vows ha did it out of spite.
Now he must teach the csrpen'er his trade:
Now show sailmsker how the sails are made.
In times of need he must be midwife too.
Or bolp to kill -as other doctors do.
Hhould a poor sailor sleep his last long sleep.
He—parson then—consigns him to the deep;
And if he has a tear or two to spare
He acts chief mourner, and bestows them there.
Well up in cooking, and in skill profound
At weighing tea and sugar by the pound;
Bhonld there be strife or mutiny on board
He drops the scales and then tikes up the sword.
A nd when the strife is over gees his rounds.
And—surgeon theu—bind up tho gaping wounds.
Now, an astronomer, he views the star*.
Measures a distance 'twlxt tho moon and Mars;
A meteorologist we find him now,
Reoording calms or winds—blow high or low.
Of course he's Euclid at his finger end?.
Or. what is harder, knows all knots and bends;
Is cunning, too, at mixincr paints and oils:
Takes everything in hand, and nothing spoils.
Versed in exchanges —up in bills of lading.
And now a merchant, for his owners trading.
They praise him high, declare he is a gem:
The credit his—the ca«h all gees to them.
On deck all night, amid the pelting rain.
In wearying calm or d- eadful hurricane,
China typhoon, cyclones in Indinn seas,
Afric's tornadces—all mere trilled these;
Or a bright glare at night off Newfoundland
Proclaims the dreaded Iceberg close at hand.
