THE NEW STREET RAILWAY.
The speedy action last nlgut in amending
the ordinance relating to street railways,
by the < 1It council, has again revived the
subject of the new street railway that was
brought up by the newspapers a few weeks
ago. The News correspondent to day
learned that a movement to baild a new
road was positively on foot. One energetic
man cf business proposes to put $10,000 into
the project. The route picked out for the
new road is ;is follows:
From the Union depot on Congress street
to Milam; on Milam to Prairie; down
JPralrie to East Broadway; thence on East
Br jadway to Congress. This roa'a will
make a continuous belt, embracing in the
xoute the Union depot, all tee hotels, and
almost reaching the Central depot. As
toon as the company is completed and
.leady for work tue city council will be
petitioned for the right of way on the streets.
PERENNIAL cotton.
A Mexican cotton plant at the cotton ex-
change is an object of much interest. It
was grown on a plantation in tha province
of Coabclla, about 370 miles south of Ple-
<3ras Ntgrap, and was planted in 1878, and
tag been in bearing without cultivation
■ever since. Tbe neck of the great tap root

James and Jesse Williams was arrested to-
day on a charge of building a fire in a
freight car of the Houston liast and West
Texas railway. He stated to The News
correspondent that he was sick, and kindled
the fire on a piece of sheet Iron that he had
taken Into the car. On being questioned as
to his bctdtiess in life, he said cuat he was a
theater man, having been with the Haverly
minstrels in London, Liverpool and
t^ueesstown, and that he connected hiin-
sself wlih tbe company ia Pittsburg, Pa.
He seemed to be anxious to have his trial

Notwithstanding his imprisonment he
seemed to be in a jovial condition.

FAST DRIVING /
The driving public has time an'l aealn
received warning from tbe press that all!
fast dmeis and riders were in danger otl
being arrested and punished for a viola-
tion ot the Jaw. Recent accidents on the
streets tnve caused Mayor Smith to order
Chief Jaik White to enforce the law in re-
ference to fast driving and riding in tha
future. To carry out tbe orders of the
mayor, the chief has directed hia officers to
carefully watch the streets aEd make ar-
rests oi all persons violating the riding and
driving ordinance.
USLAfl PULLY ENTERING A THEATER.
Last tight H. Meyers and H. Dnaias, two
boys sgfd about 14 years each, slipped iato
the gaijei y of Pillot's opera-house while the
doorkeept r was not on the alert. The dandy
cop, Tom O'Leary, saw tbe boys enter the
gallery, and from their nervous movements
elieved tbey had worked their way into the
house. A talk with the doorkeeper devel-
oped tbe fact that they had done so. when
they weie arrested and jailed. This morn-
ing the boys were compelled to answer be-
fore the mayor to the cnarge of unlawfully
entering a theater. After an e
each was fined $1.
_ examination
The ordinance bearing
upon this subject says that any one wh>
et:ers or attempts to enter a theater or
otl er public place of amusement, where a
performance or entertainment is being
given, without tbe payment of the fee estab-
lished, or without having an entrance
ticket, etc., may be fined not less than $1
nor more tban $100. This new movement
on the pajt of the authorities will no doubt
create a panic among the street arabs who
are fascinated with the glitter and tinsel of
the stage.

THEFT OF A DIAMOND RING
Last night Lizzie Leslie, who lives on
Caroline street, missed from her room a
diamond ring, vained at $100. Suspecting
another girl, named Bessie Rice, of the
theft of her property, L'zzie to day had her
arrested by Officer Youngst and taken to
the home where the ring had been taken.
On searching a dresa that had been worn
by Bessie, the stolen article was found
sewed in a team in the skirt of the gar-
ment. When the ring was recovered LUzle
concluded not to prosecute the girl, when
she was turned loose. This afternoon a
warrant was sworn out for her arrest, and
tie cfficers commenced a search for hor.
It is believed that as soon as she was re-
leased the took the first train for Galves-
ton.
A OOOD PIECE OF WORK.
It was quite a refreshing sight last night
to see the city fully represented by the
servants of the people. Shortly after the
commencement of Mayor Smith's adminis-
tration there was a constant break in the
aldermanlc line at each meeting, generally
two, and sometimes three aldermen being
a!sent. The raid ordered by the mayor
biooght all the aldermen together, who
wt re compelled to show their hands on a
flush occasion.

Tte well-known fire dog Frank, that be-
