In Very
Denounces the Force Bill
Vigorous Language.
Pittsburg, Pa., Jnly 131.—[Special]—
General Master Workmnu Povrdcrly baa ad-
dressed a letter to the Knights ot Labor in
which he arraigns the federal election or
force bill In a most vigorous manner, say-
iDg that there is more intimidation in four
lints of the law than in all the southern
outrages that have occurred since the war.
Be says shorn of verbiage the bill is intend-
ed to perpetuate the existence of the party
lu power, besides intending to encourago
fraud. Section 0 is in direct violation of
the contract by which the several
atatcs are bound to the United States,
and is a most unwarrantable interference
In the legislation of the sisterhood of
states. It is claimed that this law will en-
able the colored citizens to vote free fron;,
intimidation and inliueace. That mr,y bo
true of the outside of the polling places, but
it simply transfers the intimidation anJ in-
fluence to the inside of t^e polling booth.
"Why not act the part oi men and say that
the colored men r.ro not fit to have a vote,
for that is what they mean? If they lack
the manhood to defend their ballots with
their lives at the polls then that body of
men are not the kind to be privileged to a
vote for those who make laws for others.
The democratic party does its best to
Intimidate the colored citizens of the south
and they gave as a reason that if they did
not do so thoy would be subject to negro
rule down there, or as they put it "ignorant
rule." The workmen of the north have
never Imposed ignorant rule where tbey
elected their own reoresentatives. He calls
en the knights to voice their sentiment, and
suggests that the name of every congress-
man who voted for the bill shall be pub-,
lished to the world and the citizen* who are
opposed to such high-handed methods
should scratch them on nezt election day.
A 6HOCKING DEED.
A Fireman Cremates the Horty of an In-
fant in the Locomotive Fire Box.
A detective from the Syracuse police
headquarters waited at the station of the
Delaware, Lackawanna and Western rail-
road Thursday night for tho evening ex-
press from Oswego to come in. On its ar
rival a fireman, F. V. Curti", was taken out
of the ca band to tho city jail, charged with
a most unusual crime. Hia accuser Is Frank
Granish, a fellow fireman, with whom the
prisoner went over the road tj-day.
Curtis has been a brake-nan on the road for
nine years, but has just been aut on an en
cine to stoke, under instructions of Gran-
ish. Yesterday morning Curtis came into
the cab with a bundle, which he tossed
carelessly on the coal In tho tender. He
said nothing about its contents until the
train passed Pleasant Bridge, * lakeside ro
sort near here, when he picked it up and ro
marked that It contained all that was left
of his Fourth of July.
Curtis left the bundle undisturbed until
the train was again In full speed. Then he
picked it up and unwinding the paper
•wrapper, opened it in the sight of Granish.
It held the body of a weo baby. Curtis
said to his astonished companion that it
was his own, and that ho was going
to have a quiet funeral. Without further
ado ho opened the fire box and deliberately
threw the body In on top of the blazing
coals. He said he had freqently done the
same thing before. Garnish was appalled
at the coolness of the man, but Curtis only
laughed. Wuen the train returned to this
city at noon Garnish gavo information of
the crime to the po'Ice, who made the ar-
rest. [Washington Star.
A TugUUtic Parson Makes a Young Man
Come to Time.
Monteeal. Can., July 31.—[Special]— So
that is your game, cried Rev. Mr. Hartley,
chaplain of one of Montreal's crock military
companies and pastor of a West end con*
gregation, as he dropped his black coat and
white tie, and the nextlnstant he was giving
a scientific thrashing to one of Montreal's
beat known and richest young sports. The
story that led up to the result is as follows:
Some weeks ago| the youth in question was
encaged to wed one of the fairest daughters
of Montreal's 400. The lady in question
happened to be a member of P«rson Bart-
ley's church and also a particular
friend of the minister. In consequence
he was called upon to perform tho mar-
riage ceremony, and on the appointed day
wsb on hand at the residence of the intend-
ed bride, as was also a large party of f::iends
to assist at the wedding. To the consterna-
tion of the fair beauty and the surprise of
her friends, the groom failed to put in an
appearance. Tho wedding was declared off.
The clergyman, it is said, expressed him-
self in no indistinct way about what he
called the rascally conduct ef the youth. A
few evenings ago the clergyman was invited
to visit the young man. and thinking he
was to get an explanation of his strange
conduct, he made the visit.
He just entered the door when his first
salute was a stinging lefthander in the face.
It was then he divested himself of his gar-
ment and the youth was taught a lesson
in the manly art. So badly was he done U"
by the reverend pugilist that he spfJt ^
week in a private hospital. As tb^"6r„tj,er
and father of the affianced baH, promised a
similar proceeding he, to escnt)0 further

A Tried Remedy for Eilioutnesi.
Those who suffer from disorder or inaction of
the liver will never get the upper hand of the
unruly organ so long as they use such irrational
remedies as blue pills, calomel and podophyllin.
But from the tried and popular medicine, Hos-
tetter's Stomach Bitters, thoy may expect re-
lief with a certainty of obtaining it. 'l'he influ-
ence of the Bitters upon the great biliary gland
is direct, powerful and speedily felt. The re-
lief afforded Is not spasmodic, but complete
and permanent. The sallowness of the skin,
furred appearance of tho tongue, indlpcestion,
costiveness, headshce. nausea, pains through
the ripht Bide and shoulder, in fact every ac-
companiment of the obstinate complaint are
entirely and promptly removed by a course of
this inestimable medicine, in behalf which tes-
timony is constantly emanating from every
quarter, and from all classes of society.

In the Texas and Pacific yards, mention of
which appeared in last night's dispatches,
was thought to have died last night and the
remains were taken to an undertaker's shop
preparatory to interment. Tho undertaker
noticed that the supposed dead man's eyes
opened, and after informing his callers that
tbey were a little premature for a funeral

patient to consciousness. This evening he is
reported doing well with prospects for re-
covery favorable. As will l.a remembered,
the injured mon hails from Conway, Ark.
Saved by a Bullfrog.
There are at least four newspaper report
era in New York who are stanch friends of
the bullfrog family. Tbey are engaged on
morning papers, and several evenings ago
they were plowing their way at a tremen-
dous pace through the sand and wire grass
of the meadows skirting Newark bay, back
of Greenville, N. J., to investigate a story
of a yacht that had been missing, with
eleven men on board, for several days.
The hour was late, the story prom-
ised to be a long one, ami much
valuable time bad been wasted in discov-
ering the name of the place from which
the boat had sailed, so the yonug men were
poshing on in the dark toward the shore
without stopping to search for footpaths.
All at once, from just benea'b their feet, a

THE GREAT EXPLORER.
Stanley Writes a Friend About His Physi-
cal Troubles—His Visit to America.
New York, July 81.—[Special]-A letter
received in this city yesterday from Henry
M. Stanley by a personal friend of the great
explorer contains some interesting partic-
ulars about his recent physical troubles.
"My Illness," Mr. Stanley writes, "Is
wholly due to tbe fact that my correspond'*
ence was altogether too enormous. A dozen
secretaries could not have answered the
letters. There have been something
like 8000 letters, congratulations,
presents, etc., to att&nd to
which have completely overwhelmed me.
This is the first ntjfo i have written since
my illness, eohlinues Mr. Stanley, and
tbe only cne I mean to write for some
.reeks,"
After a long resting spell, especially from
the nervous labor of tho pen, the explorer
proposes to visit tho continent. Mr. Stan*
ley says he looks forward with delight to
his visit to this city next November.
