THE CHEROKEES
The Comning of the Cherokees
In the identical East Texas region where the early
Sr anish explorers and French fur traders came into contact
with what was then the uiost highly civilized group of Indians
between the Mi ssissippi and the Rio Grande, one hundred fifty
years lnter the vanguard of Anglo-Saxon frontiersmen found another
group of Inditans who perhaps enjoyed the highest state
of civilization within the borders of the United Stntes at
the coming of the white man -- the Cherokees. In the winter
of 1819 and 1820 Chief Bowles led sixty of his warriors,
probably of the hunter class of Cherokee Indians, from
Arkf.nsas into Texas. Soon thereafter they were joined by
other Cherokees and their allied tribes under the leadership
of Richard Fields, John Dunn Hunter, and others and settled
in Spanish territory in what are the present Texrs counties
of Cherokee, Smith, and parts of Rusk, Herderson, and Van
Zandt.
Hutter was an Ataericn who had been captured by the
lrndians while a boy, and though subsequently rescued, had
returned to the wild tribal life and had been adopted by the
