Weekly Cotton llevlew.
New Orl»aii», La., Nov. 2.—Tht>
stlmuIaUnK Influence of a good spot
demand ' and more crop damage
through adverse weather 4»ciit tho
price of cotton to now high lijvuls laat
week while apot prloeu wure #ent to
high prices which were only exowded
In Civil war times when coiton pro-
duction In the south almost ceased.
In thla market, as well as at a few
points in the interior, there wore spot
transactions at as high prices as 40
cents a pound. December on Wednes-
day rose to S7.30. Spots at Ihelr
highest were quoted at S5» cents for
middling. The week closed at net
galng of 92 to 126 points on contracts.
Weather and crop reports of the
week were uniformly had and the gov-
ernment's report on condition to
October 25 of 61.1 per cent of nor-
mal made a new low record.
This week weather conditions will
be more Important than aver for
there is much cotton In the fields in
the central and western sections of the
belt and more rain on It would be
disastrous. Hecause of recent rains
picklntr has been at a standstill in
gome sections of the western belt.
A great deal of lnlerewt will be
taken in the fourlh ginning report of
tho season, due Saturday from the
ccnsu^ bureau /ind carrying the crop
down to the first of the month. Pri-
vate estimates of the ginning output
probably will appear early in tho
week and they ure likely to have con-
siderable influence on the trading.
Weekly Dry tJmxls Hex lew.
Now York, Nov. 2.—Cot Ion goods
prices have continued to rl«o on snnill
sales and many of the lending selling
agencies hav© endeavored to check
tho mlvance by withdrawing from the
markets.
One of the choice brands of 4x4
musllna was advanced 2i cents a yard
to a baMs of 35 cenls a yard and then
platod at value. Staple ginghams
have been sold ahead for delivery in-
to March of next ?eur. Stiles of
ginghams have been steady and gom
of the largest mills are unable to «i\e
additional deliveries for five months.
Colored drills have sold steadily and
nre difficult to g"t in additional quan-
tities fi»r the export markets. Mann
facturer* are apprehensive of diffi-
culty in obtaining suitable grade* of
cotton and the finer end of tho mar-
ket Is growing firmer In consequence
Importers ate placing orders abroad
for cotton to be delivered next year
and exporter* continue to report dif-
ficulty In obtaining tiuanUly fot theli
needs.
—
Weekly Ilnaixdal lUn lew.
New York, Nov. 2.—Quoted values
of many slocks, including <he familial
speculative issue*, mounted to new
heights last week, regardless of the
labor crisis, sensational rates for call
money and other unsettling factors.
Trading was more epe^taculur and
extravagant movements of the inld-
yaar featured. In fact October estab-
lished a record for dealings in stocks
and bonds without parallel In fifteen
years. Incidentally a seat on tho ex-
change aold for I108.000, about 14,000
in excess of any previous figure,
Many new maximums were made by
stocks which a year ago were known
as "war brides" but now are regarded
an standard "peace Industrials" At
intervals there were Indications of an
expansion of the short Interest. Much
of the trading wna traceable to in-
terior sources. The excellent quar-
terly ststsment of the United States
Steel corporation drew attention to
lews prominent Issues of like descrip-
tion.
Further weakness of foreign ex-
chnnge, particularly to Italy and Ger-
many, continued to react upon the
more Important centers. Thus far
the new Brldali go\ernment loan,
which gives every promise of suc-
cess, has had llltlo effect toward
strengthening Mils in this market.
New capital offerings for moderate
amounts were readily absorbed. The
bond market manifested no appre-
ciable tendency to throw off It* long
pW'valling heaviness.
Wcrltly Metal Kc\lc\v.
New York, Nov. 2—Higher prices
In the way of premiums paid for
prompt, delivery to consumers have
been noled in both iron and steel dur-
ing the last week. In steel the de-
msnd for setnl-flnlshed products has
unearthed a scarcity which in turn
hns been the signal for a stronger de-
mand.
Kxport demand continues heavy but
sales have been limited because of the
unsettled, situation in the domestic
market. TJght products nre particu-
larly strong.
The market for prompt delivery
Iron Is generally from $1 to 12 a ton
higher than the price!* which pre-
vailed directly after the steel strike.
Copper continues remarkably dull.
J,end continue* firm with some
business passing.
Zinc showed an easier tone.
Hecord tonnngo of tin are reported
at tiio local port but tho strike of the
longshoremen has prevented normal
movement and the market for avail-
able spot tin continues firm.
The OMsiiioMIe Kcnnotny Truck
<v»ver* had roads with ease, due to its
high road clearance.
