New Orleans.
Mew Orleans, La„ Oct. 19—-Violent price
changes featured the trade iu tottcn on^thM
market today with the general tendency
downward, the net change for the ae*elon
being a loss of 25 to 32 points. Liquidation
of long contracts was the main influence
ami at times there was hea\y piessurc
from it.
The opening slump caused Mu*h ex-
citement around the ring and gave the
market an unsettled tone for the whole
sesnion.
Predi'-ttan* of frost 1rt the belt tonight
and delayed weather returns showing heavy
general rain* in the central ami eastern
lieltn yesterday were sustaining features of
some weight until the afternoon when trade
regarded unfavorably rumois that a privati
bureau was out with a report showing 7 -
720,000 bales ginned to Oct. 17. n much
lower amount than generally looked !m\
The reported sinking of a Cunard liner
also was received unfavorably.
New Yerk.
New York, Oct. 19.--The cotton market
was very neivou.^ and unsettled today. Re-
actionary sentiment which had developed
after the record breaking advance of yester-
day morning was modified to some extent
by unfavorable weather conditions but every
bulge seemed to meet Increased offerings
and after selling at 18 57 during the morn-
ing, January broke to II 22. closing at I* 21.
The general list closed steady at a uet de-
cline of 24 to 29 points.
The market opened steady at a de« line of
2 to 21 points under overnight selling or-
ders and In response to relatively ea«y
cables. There seemed lo he a. veiy good
demand around 18.20 for Jannnry ei about
4* points under the high record of yester-
day morning, and pi ices steadied up during
the forenoon. Fresh buying through com
mission boons was a factor, while it se« med
that seine of yesterday's sellers for profits
were replacing their cotton. Apprehensions
that killing temperatures wntild follow the
heavy rains reported ill the belt as a result
of the gulf disturbance whUh passed into
the interior yesterday, undoubtedly encour-
age ei this advance, and there was also buy-
ing oil an idea that the south had sold a
sufficient proporticn of its eicp to bold the
remainde i for higher price*. Offerings is-
cieared above- tilt 1*H< level for January,
however, and the market was unsettled in
the late trading.
