HI Paso with Its section of the Stats
has been somewhat fittingly referred
to as the vermiform appendix of Tex-
an. This characterization is rather
pertinent in view of the fact that the
people of that section are clamoring
for an operation. They are inflam-
ed and want to be cut off. Grand
Old Texas listens to their complaints
benlgnantly and prescribes the old
home remedy, castor oil.
The circus "combination" has at
last found a way to get rid of Captain
Bill McDonald. They have dug up a
district judge willing to grant an
injunction and now Bill is not allow-
ed to hang around. This injunction
tarn of affairs places matters where
the courts can pass on the question
of whether or not the afternoon and
Bight shows constitute a single per-
formance.
One Texan has announced a new
method of obtaining electric lights
And power at much less cost than
the systems now in use, and another
Texan has invented a paint which is
absolutely fireproof. There is light
ahead.
Even worse than the Galveston
storm, in Its fierceness and duration,
ha*, been the terrible visitation in
Florida and the straits. Whereas the
Galveston wind and flood waters de-
stroyed more property in a given
area and immeasureably more lives,
probably, the Florida storm has last-
ed for days and there has been great-
er loss of property in the aggregate.
The whole lower peninsula Is In
wreckage, with oranges and truck ut-
terly destroyed. It is a loss which it
Will take years to replace.
After many attempts to make good
on predicting that the hot wither

a whack at it and directs the atten-

coming.

The intimation that Gover:
Campbell will call another spec!
session of the legislature In Decem-
ber to deal with such recommenda-
tions as he failed to get through at
the previous sessions, was hardly to
be credited. The Governor has had
bis -way in most everything but he
could hardly seriously consider an-
other session to complete his record.
The promise of the total count of
the United States cenus for next
month indicates that t£e present sys-
tem of counting 1s far ahead of what
has prevailed in the pat>t.
The South stood firm on the prop-
osition te not give guaranteed bills
of lading for cotton, and the foreign-
ers, who bad organized a company to
do the guaranteeing are now agree-
ing to postpone taking drastic action.
They are buying the cotton any Way
they can get It.
Maybe the turnip seeds will sprout
now. The faithful ones have been
planting them ever since August
showers were promised.
Anyway, If It does rain, we have
pared streets now.
Watch the cockle burs. When they
go to shedding blooms and maturing
a few burs to each stalk, frost IS

sign "which, never falls."
The Washington belle who had a
life-else statue made of herself, in the
nude, must be blushing now. The
marble was too large to be taken Into
the deors of the home after having
been dipped from abroad and the
workmen left it outdoors where a cur-

INDEPENDENT PHONE
MAKING IMPROVEMENTS
Mr. E. B. Freye, representing the
Kellogg Switchboard and Supply Co.
of Chicago, is in tbe city to Install
the new equipment being placed for
the Independent Telephone Company,
which institution is preparing to
move its central office to the second
floor of the building just across the
avenue from their present location,
and over the store room formerly oc-
cupied by the Findeisen-Dauwalter
business.
The installation of this up-to-date
equipment will make the Temple of-
fice as modern as any in the coun-
try, and in the telephone business
improvements follow rapidly. What
was moden ten years ago and far in
advance of the time before then 1*
now practically obsolete and in equip-
ping the Temple office there is to be
installed only the very latest In tele-
phonic apparatus.
The new switchboard is to have a
capacity of 1600 phones and it will
possess features which will be ap-
preciated by the public, and which
will give Improvement in the service.
Among the improvements which the
subscribers will appreciate may be
mentioned the device which enables
the users of party lines to be freed
from the eternal ringing of their
bells. Only the phone asked for will
ring and the other bells on tbe line
will remain silent. Four such sub-
scribers to a line can be handled in
the city, and eight phones can be
strung on the rural lises. Another
improvement which will be very
much appreciated and affecting all
subscribers will be that when one has
a phone to the ear there can be no
nerve and temper-shattering noise
through central's "ringing In." Cen-
tral may lose track of tbe users of
the phone all right, and she may try
to call one up while he Is talking
to someone else, but the new arrange-
ment will nullify her efforts, and the
talker and talkee can complete their
interesting conversation In peace,
without being shot in the ear.
When moved into the new quarters
and utlllxlng the new equipment the
Independent people will dance for
Joy.

moved. The citizens of Orange ex-

NEW WORM DISCOVERED.
In Galveston Waters, Which I* Dam-
aging Creosoted Timber*.
Galveston, Tex , Oct. 20.—The Uni-
ted States engineering department at
Galveston announce the discovery of
another species of water worm of
teredo which is doing considerable
damage to submerged Umber In ves-
sels, barges and piling. This new
worm, not yet classified, does not ap-
pear to toe stopped by timbers coated
with creosote, as is the teredo, but
specimen* of creosoted timbers have
been discovered on which It has
worked a vast amount of harm.
The new worm is described as hav
lng a shell covering like that of a
clam and the t
from
eights of an inch In diameter, in
creasing In size as they penetrate the
wood
"we were just skylarking, me
and me old woman, and she ran out
in the yard and me after her. We're
lived together for fifteen year* and I
aint never beat her and I ain't going
to, either, except when we are play-
ing."
"That black eye? Why, judge, I
had that for several days. A truck
handle flew up and struck me In the
eye. It might have been bleeding
when the officer arrested me; I sup-
pose I rubbed It in the scuffle, but It
wasn't no fight."
"What he says is the truth, judge,"
chimed in the old lady, who couldn't
suppress a laugh at tie joke of a po-
liceman arresting her and ber old man
for fighting when they were just fun-
ning with broomsticks and a potato
masher. "Ain't we got a right to play,
even If we are grown up, judge?"
"According to the evidence, your
playing was something approaching
a tragedy," spoke the court.
"Well, what do yer think of that.
John?" echoed the woman to ber life
partner, who began to erallste the se-
riousness of the police court.
The testimony of the police officer
who made the arrest was to the effect
that his attention had been called to
the family disturbance, and rushing
to the scene he found the man and
woman In fierce combat, swiuglng
lights to the head, upper-cutting to
the chin and solar plexing In the re-
gion of the heart. The woman bad
abandoned a broomstick after tapping
the old man a few taps on the crani-
um, and a potato masher lay on the
ground close by.
The offcer finally parted the playful
couple and took them to the police sta-
tion, where a charge of fighting was
lodged against them.
An effort to find out bow the trou-
ble started and who struck the first
blow were unavailing and the court
gave up the task. The recorder dis-
missed the case with a warning to
the affectionate couple never again to
play with broomstick and potato
masher, a^d they left the court room
arm In arm.

Liberal, Kan., Want* to Snow What

Liberal, Kan., Oct. 19.—The ques-
tion whether or not the country
around Liberal is underlaid with ar-
tesian water, oil or gas, is to un-
dergo the test. For the purpose of
drilling a prospect hole from 2,000
to 8,000 feet deep, a number of local
business men will organize a stock
company and push the proposition
to some conclusion during ths next
sixty days. Negotiations ars now
pending whereby It la expected that
T. A. StancUff, an expert wellman of
Lake Arthur, N. M., will contract for
Use well. Mr. StancUff has but re-
cently demonstrated that artesian
water caa be had In Morton county
in commercial proportions and la of
tbe opinion that the same condition*
apply In Seward county. This belief
has existed for a number of years,
and experts hare suggested from time
to time that a prospect well would
reveal the presence of oil and gas in
commercial quantities under a large
portion of thl* section of Southwest
Kansas. It Is believed, however,
that oU and gas, If found, wiU be
at a greater depth than the water
bearing Dakota sandstone, which
gives up tbe artesian water.
