FRIDAY DEC 7j 1945
EISENHOWER DEBIOCUAT
On REPUBLICAN
WASHINGTON When Admiral
Dewey returned triumphant from
capturing the Philippines in the
SpanishAmerican war newsmen
asked the conquering hero whether
he was a Democrat or a Republl
can The admiral wasnt quite sure
which That ended the Dewey boom
for President
Today Gen Dwlght Elsenhower
may be put in the same position as
Admiral Dewey Both parties are
considering new blood for 1948 GOP
leaders arc convinced that given a
candidate who can win labor votes
yet not alienate the Hoover conserv-
atives they can win Obviously
Elsenhower Is Important presidential
timber
Popular Impression is that Elsen
hower Is a Republican He was ap
pointed to West Point from the rock
ribbed Republican state of Kansas
by GOP Senator Joseph P Brlstow
And nobody in those days could get
anywhere In Kansas unless he was a
Republican
However though It may be news
to GOP leaders Dwlght Elsenhower
put himself on record early In life
as a Democrat Furthermore he
was an energetic William Jennings
Bryan Democrat and In November
1009 made a speech at the annual
Democratic banquet held In Abilene
Kan The other speakers were
older and seasoned Kansas Demo-
crats but Dwlght Elsenhower then
only 19 was picked to stand up witn
them and harangue the crowd He
did
IKES OLD miEND
I am Indebted for this information
to J W Howe now of Emporia Kan
Howe not only published the Abi-
lene News but was a member of the
school board and knew young
Dwight better than anyone outside
his own family
The Abilene News office was head-
quarters for a group of high school-
boys who came there to discuss
their problems talk sports and poll
tics read the papers and do odd
Jobs for the paper J W Howe says
of Elsenhower
Dwlght liked to read the ex-
change newspapers from out of
town Ifc neer complained
about working seeming to take
that for granted In school dis-
cussions he was always for the
nnderdog and contended we
needed a somewhat better dis-
tribution of wealth
William Jennings Bryan at that
time had made many speeches in
Abilene and the young folks liked
to hear him In fact Bryan made
some definite inroads on the Repub
licans The Republican party at
that time was beginning to be split
Into two groups led by Taft and
Teddy Roosevelt The fight In Abi
lene was bitter and this was he
situation when Dwlght Eisenhower
started out in 1909 to get the proper
endorsements to enter West Point
DWIGHT GOT TO WEST POINT
The Eisenhower family had nc
political pull on the contrary
Dwlghts father wai listed as i
Democrat though he took little part
in politics Dwlght himself was
more active than his father bin
whatever pull he had was with
the Democrats However the fac-
tional Republican fight helped him
Editor Howe the towns chief Demo-
cratic leader advised Dwlght o
go get the endorsement of Phil W
Heath editor of the Abilene Chron-
icle and spokesman for the
SquareDeal Republicans also lo
Jt get the endorsement of Charles M
w Harger editor of the Abilene Re
fe Hector spokesman for the SUnd
JK Fat Republicans
Ik Since young Elsenhower was not
fft allied with either faction Heath and
eji Harger were very friendly and
liK gladly gave him their support Thus
v he was able to obtain not only the
endorsement of the Democrats but
of both Republican factions a real
compliment to his standing In the
community r
Elsenhowers first and only ven
lure Into politics occurred while he
was taking postgraduate work at
the Abilene high school preparatory
to West Point Chief speaker at the
Democratic banquet was George H
Hodges later governor of Kansas
Dwlghts subject was The Student
in Politics
Two themes ran through the
speech of the 19yearold future
commander of the Allied armies in
Europe preparedness and helping
the underdog
According to the Abilene News
To say that he handled himself
nicely would be putting it mildly
His speech was well received
A few months later Ike Elsen
hower was in West Point where no
one Is supposed to be either a Demo-
crat or a Republican

ALAKMINCt REACTIONS
TO FOOTBALL FLASHES
Elmer Twltchell red hot football
enthusiast Is near his annual grid
season collapse He cant stand the
strain of those football battles Not
that he goes to many games He
tea few In the bowls What ruins
Elmer are the newsreel movies
He can sit ouletly through most
movies without any Impulse to Join
the players on the screen but foot-
ball scenes get him Just flash on
There Is something to be said for
Elmer Those movie flashes of epic
contests are hard to follow Half the
time we are not sure whether the

rapher now and then or whether its
vice versa And it Is our conviction
that the football episodes frequent

LINES AFTER STUDYING
Whats become of that old beaver
That my father used to wear
It was tall and rather battered
Or hard knocks it had its share
Oh for years It had been missing
But Its back among us now
And this season sees it perching
Over moms and sisters brow
Tathef wore It but to weddings
Or when greeting folks of fame
It was not worn on the bias
Comedy was not his aim
But now mother has no scruples
And her mirror seems to please
As she puts It on her noodle
When her mlllncr dccrecsl
Mom may cut It down extend It
Doll It up with things galore
But she never can deceive me-
lts the plug hat father wore
And this Is my firm conclusion
Though she wears It with aplomb
It looked better on my old man
Than It ever looks on mom

EPIPHANY TIME
OF GIFTGIVING
My Dnlly Prayer This Year
Threshold of a New Year
Epiphany being the time of gift
giving In many lands presents are
associated with the Wise Men and
their giftbearing satellites
According to Spanish legend the
Wise Men pass through Spain each
year on Epiphany Eve as they Jour-
ney to Bethlehem to pay homage to
the Christ Child Children envision-
ing the procession of the Magi wend
ing its way across the horizon the
gemset crowns and blazing torches
melting with the sunset place their
shoes on window sills and balconies
those views of two big team tear ° > e ° Jed sho e
filled with hay for the Wise Mens
toff up and down the screen and rli
horses on Epiphany morning the
Elmer goes berserk Ho rips off his
coat the moment a game starts
Lately he has taken to wearing a
heavy sweater and perhaps wrap-
ping himself In a blanket How he
loves to throw them oil and gallop
down the aisle J
Last night the big came suddenly
flashed on the screen between two
big features With only 10 yards to-
go for a touchdown a player dropped
the ball and it rolled over the side-
lines and clean out of the movie
Elmer thought it went into the third
aisle He sprang from his scat and
went for it
He came up with a felt hat a
handbag and a bag of potatoes be-
longing to a Long Island movie ad-
dict reversed the field and seemed
about to make the most sensational
run of the year when thrown by
the house policemen and a violin-
ist
hay Is gone and toys and sweet-
meats overflow such receptacles
Bcfana was cleaning house when
the Wise Men stopped to Inquire how
near they were to Bethlehem Be
fana knew nothing about Bethlehem
nor had she heard of the Holy In-
fant whom the Magi were seeking
so she finished her sweeping and
went to bed But Befana could not
sleep the regal cortege which had
passed her door the bright Star
which gleamed in the sky and her
own premonitions haunted her so
Befana started for Bethlehem at
midnight on Epiphany Eve
Alas the magic hour had passed
and although Befana has wandered
ever since she has never found her
way lo Bethlehem
That Is why La Befana brings toys
and confections to Italian children
on Epiphany Eve and Russian Ba
bouska holds a candle to the face
of each sleeping child while she slips
present under his pillow hoping
that some day she wilt find the Babe

Story of The Visit
Of St Nicholas Was
Written for Own Kin
On December 23 1822 Dr Clem
ent Clark Moore told his children
the story of St Nicholas and read
to them a poem entitled The Visit
of St Nicholas which he had
written especially for the occasion
Dr Moore was chagrined when
The Visit of St Nicholas was pub-
lished In the Troy N Y Sentinel
on December 23 1823 as an anony
mous contribution a Doctor of Di
vinity he considered the poem be
neath his dignity and many years
passed before Dr Moore allowed it
to become known that he was the
author thereof no doubt he suspect
ed how The Visit of St Nicholas
had found its way to the Sentinel
Miss Harriet Dutlcr daughter of
the Rev David Butler had been a
guest In the Moore home on the
night before Christmas In 22
and had hastily copied Dr Moores
narration in her album Treasuring
the poem throughout the entire year
Miss Butler sent a copy of It to the
Sentinel as the Christmas season of
1823 approached
