Navigation company, were transfer-
red from the veasel early today after
ahe had cone hard aground mi an em-
bankment of Hyde Park, seven ml lea
north of here.
The boat (truck shortly before mid-
night. but It was after t o'clock this
morning before the transfer of the
passengers was effected. Most of them
resumed their Journey to Albany by
rail. In the panic which followed
the grounding several passengers were1
slightly hurt. Many had been thrown
from their berths by the Impact which
tore a great jagged hole In the Mo-
hawk's bow and forced her nearly M
feet up the river bank, almost to the
New York Central tracks. Officials of
the Une said today that the pecldent
was due to a hr»*V in the steering
gear

noon. Nearly every One had retired
when the ship hit the rocks.
The excited passengers swarmed to
the decks and while the officers
tried to calm their fears the Hfe boats
were got ready to be lowered. The
vessel was ao fast aground, however,
a« to be In no danger of sinking.
In response to the vessel's whistles
of distress, the steamers Trojan and
Iroquois of the same line came up
and took off consignments of passeng-
ers, many of them hysterical women.

is self-Immured In a cell la Auburn
prison. His first day In prison for ths
