. - TWO WORDS LEFINEB.
Difference Between a Sanitarium and
a Sanatorium
The words "sanitarium"' and "sau-
atorlum'' are popularly understood to
bave t*e same meaning and are gen-
erally used interchangeably when des
ignating or describing places of ref-
uge for sick iieople, but there is, in
fact, quite a distinction between the
meaning of the two words. In an-j
swer to a correspondent on thig sub-
ject the literary Digest says:
"The distinction between thtse;
words lies in the fan that they are
derived from two different Latin
roots. 'Sanatorium' Is derived from
the late Latin sanatorium, meaning
health giving. Tije term relates spe-
cially to 'an institution for treat-
ment of disease or care of invalids,
especially an establishment employ-
ing natural therapeutic agents, or
conditions peculiar to the locality or
some specific treatnoeut or treating
particular diseases.' On the otfe-tr
hand, ,'sanitarium' is derived fr»tn
the Latin saitas, from saus. meaning
whole or souud. 'Sanitarium' relates
more specifically to a place where
the hygienic conditions are preser-
vative of health as distinguished
from one where theraputlc agencies
are employed.' Hence It is the prov-
ince of a 'sanatorium' to restore It.
Care should he exercised In combin-
ing the proper vowels In these two
words in order to Indicate correct-
ly the derivation. '

cal will and upon evtry occasion he
scolds and finds fault He makes
her a drudge and does not hesitate
to make her assist hiin in his occu-
pation as a fisherman Trudging
along with a pair of oars on her
shoulders, the father leads the way
to his boat and there he finds his
helper, who is his daughter s lover.
The young fellow greets the girl af-
fectionately aud the obi man shows
his disapproval in ugly mo«l and pro
fane words. He then be< l«!*s>s to his
heller to get into the boat and tells
his daughter to be gone.
Out upon the sea ttu- two fisher-
men are uow hauling their net,
which comes up empty. The old
man is wild with rage when he finds
a hole in the net, for which defect
he vents his wrath upon his young
assistant who resents it and denies
that it is his fault. They begin their
return to shore with the older fish-
erman in ugly mood. When they
reach the shore he renews his abuse
and becomes bo enraged he strikes
the young man with a stone felling
him. His victim lays motionless up-
on the sands. The old tyrant con-
cludes he has killed him; in haste
to flee the spot he drops his hat and
when he discovers hlH loss fears to
return for it and at the same time
realizes that his hat, if found, would
be Incriminating evidence.
Just as the man is gazing upon
the prostrate form of the object of
his wrath, his daughter has come to
the boat landing, and, unseen b>'
her father, sees him strike her lover.
She finds her father's hat. and with
loathing is pompted not to touch It,
but, her filial duty asserting itself,
she places it in bosom of her diess.
Kissing her lover's faoe, and think-
ing him dead, she hastens back to
her home, where s!u> meets her bru-
tal father, who has tried to drown
his thoughts and oonadence lu vHe
drink.
She gives his lost hat to ktfci and
♦ie realizes that she must know of
his crime and thinks he will kill her,
but throws h.«r from him In a frenzy
and rushes frouj the house. In the
meantime'1 ao®p sailors j6nd i the
young lover on th« coast, revive hint
and lift him into their boat. The
father goes direct to the scene of
his supposed crime and imagines he
sees the form of the lover lying in
the water, washed by the tide and
partly covered with sand. The fa-
ther goes Insane and wanders over
the rocky oraga A storm arises and
he dies fom exposure.
The daughter, with lantern In
hand, starts in search of her father,
whose fa I lu ne to return to bis home
makes her anxious. She discovera
her father's body while making her
way over the cliffs and rocks, and,
at the same time her lover, who has
been land*d by the sailors at a dis-
tance- frojft his home and ia on his
"way to the little village, comes upon
his sweetheart, who at first gtaJtled
at hia sudden appearance; but when
she sots hia head bandaged she knowa
he was not Itliled by her father, and
throws herself Into his arms, and,
as they loo* upon the dead form
of her father, the young man asks
her to marry blm that ho may be
her protector *nd provider.
A year or two later we aee them
in their own cozy little home, blessed
with the aunahlne of happiness, a
pretty little baby and the loving
Jdadntss that makes them doubly
blest.
There Is just a little bit of de-
lightful difference in this picture
