Texas GOP avalanche
By KENNETH AARON
BRISEND1NE
Graphics Editor
It was virtually a state-wide
sweep for the Republicans Tuesday.
Governor Rick Perry won an
unprecedented fourth full term as Texas
governor in Tuesday's election, defeating
challenger Bill White. Rick Perry stated
"conservatives are winning offices, and
champions of big government are cleaning
out their desks right now."
Perry is right on the money.
Republicans massacred Democrats for
statewide offices and achieved nearly two-
thirds majority in the Texan House, taking
out 21 Democratic incumbents and reach-
ing a mark not seen since the Civil War.
The GOP also won three seats
in congress. As well as taking six of seven
seats on the State Board of Education.
Across the state, Republican
candidates won major victories or nar-
rowly lost elections. It is a good time to be
Republican in the State of Texas.

Alumni Congressman Stenholm
honored with new exhibit
MEDIA RELATIONS
Tarleton State University is now home to a little piece
of Washington, D.C., thanks to an exhibit and gallery honoring
former Congressman, and Tarleton graduate, Charlie Stenholm.
Stenholm was recently on campus to dedicate the gallery and to
thank the many participants who played a role in recreating his
Washington office, and 26 years in Congress, with exacting detail.
"I want to thank everyone who was involved in this proj-
ect," Stenholm said. "So many members of Congress never have
the privilege to be honored like this."
Patsy Reynolds with the university's Facilities Planning
office developed the final design concept, and construction was
completed for Homecoming Week. A gallery dedication ceremony
was held during Homecoming festivities.
"We studied photos of the original office and came up
with a design concept based on that," Reynolds said. "I think the
crews did an excellent job of recreating the space."
The exhibit is located in the university's Tarleton Center,
the first building visited by many prospective students.
"It has really made an impression during many campus
tours," said Laurie Gaiser, director of School Relations. "I want to
thank you (Stenholm) for allowing Tarleton to house the exhibit."
Stenholm graduated in 1959 from the two-year Tarleton
College and went on to receive his bachelor's and master's de-
grees from Texas Tech University. He credits a Tarleton professor
with his decision to pursue a career beyond the farm.
"If it weren't for Professor Joe Autry I wouldn't be stand-
ing here honored by you today," Stenholm said. "Dr. Autry called
me into his office and said, 'If you only want to be a farmer, you're
wasting your time and your parents' money. But maybe there's
something else you want to do.'"
Stenholm hopes that future Tarleton Texans will receive
the same inspiration from the exhibit.
"I hope this inspires young men and women to be not
only better students, but better citizens," he said. "Tarleton really
does give the best of the best to students."
Tarleton staff members involved in the project included
Donna Strohmeyer, Laurie Gaiser, Janice Horak, Trudy Carlson, Lori
LaRue, Lori Jefferies, Donna Savage and Gary Spurr.
Additional staff members on the project were Nickie
Hicks, Ralph Reeves, Gary James, Danny Brown, Herb Miller, Floyd
Rush, Troy Hale, Clint Rush, Justin Jones, Kenneth Groene, Logan
Bonner, Wes Moore, Kenneth Tuggle, Patsy Reynolds, Rhonda Ru-
cas, Cheryl Smith, Trae Oliver, Joe Standridge, Aaron Wand, Larry
Smith, Jerry Graham and Dr. Bert Little.
Degree Evaluation replaced by DegreeWorks

Ryan Cheek, SGA's Vice President
of Academic Affairs, has talked about a pro-
gram called DegreeWorks at several of the

Evaluation, but has some upgraded fea-
tures. Degree Evaluation is available to al
students through Ducktrax and shows the
classes a student has taken and still needs
to take to complete their degree. Degree-
Works is a needed change "because Degree
Evaluation was complicated with its format-
ting," explained
Cheek. "Students
were having trouble
using Degree Evalu-
ation and adminis-
tration is progres-
sive in its attempt
to please students,"
he concluded.
Cheek was famil-
iarized with Degree-
Works by Dr. Dennis
Jones, a member
of the committee
working on the
DegreeWorks, who
showed him the
system.
DegreeWorks
is already acces-
sible to students through the quick-link tool
in My Gateway. Degree Evaluation is still
available. However, advisors have already
switched to DegreeWorks, according to
Cheek.
Cheek claims that students have
been responding positively to the change.
One student, Taylor Atkins, an English
major, had reported to Cheek that Degree-
Works is "more user friendly, provides an
easier planning method, it's comprehensive,
and very well laid out."
Deans and Department heads are
still currently working on degree templates
with the faculty and advisors to create a list
of specific courses for all degrees including
combinations of concentrations, meaning
those students seeking dual degrees or
minors. The templates are expected to be in
place by fall 2011.
DegreeWorks is also in the process
of having the classes remaining on the
students degree linked to the course list
to show the courses' availability. However,
registration is still through Ducktrax.
The major differences are that Degree-
Works includes a GPA calculator for both
single term and a four-year
cumulative GPA, and also
ncludes a planner option
for the four years. There is a
graduation calculator to help
determine the needed GPA for
a student to meet their desired
cumulative GPA. Finally, all of
this personalized information
is capable of being saved as a
PDF file.DegreeWorks is "a lot
more user friendly overall," said
Cheek.

SGA addresses
bullying on campus
By CHLOE GREEN
staff writer
This week SGA discussed the rising issue of bullying
not only surfacing here at Tarleton, but growing nationwide.
"We have a huge problem on campus with bullying issues.
This is a nation-wide event," Alycia Pruitt, Student body
president said.
"Its race, weight, people turning away drugs," Pruitt
continued as she expressed her desire to expose this issue
to the student body.
"There's no reason any of our family should feel this
way." James Reed, student body Vice President said.
Pruitt encouraged students to stand up against acts
of violence; stand up for our Tarleton brothers and sisters.
"It is not worth losing a Tarleton family member," she said.
"SGA does not stand for bullying on this campus."
"SGA is a safe zone," Reed said.
Speaking in the native tongue of Scotland, Dr. Jeff
Justice from the Social Studies Department discussed a new
Study Abroad opportunity during the Summer I session. The
Scotland Study Abroad program is in the process of becom-
ing a permanent option for students
Fill the Field, an event where student organizations
will reserve sections of the Texan Memorial Stadium to fill
with donation items, is scheduled for March 3. All will pro-
ceeds go to the Stephenville community. Many of the A&M
system schools are interested in participating in this event.
On Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. there will be a dodge ball tour-
nament. All proceeds will go to the Zach Shaver memorial
fund.
Students are encouraged to send in "I am Tarleton"
quotes to SGA online, explaining what makes them a true
Tarleton Texan or TexAnn.
Little known facts were shared, such as that John
Tarleton died on Sept. 11 and he lived in four states prior
to walking to Texas to found our University. While in Texas,
Tarleton spent most of his time in Waco.
Discussion was opened to the floor on the topic of
carrying concealed handguns. At the end of Jan. the 82nd
legislation will meet in Austin to discuss this issue. "We want
student opinion," Pruitt said, the 12 executive members do
not constitute the whole student body.
The Kinesiology Fitness club's funding request was
approved for $500.

Delta Phi Xi were the winners of the Yell Contest small

as the winners in the article titled "Delta Zeta chants
for victory, wins yell contest."
Last week, in the article "Tarleton Association of Infor-
mation Technology Professionals (AITP) continues win-
ning way" we listed Jake Rhodes as one of the winners,
however we neglected to mention his two research
partners James Boshart and Court Sullivan.
