APPLICATION FOR
RECORDED TEXAS HISTORIC LANDMARK
In an attempt to determine to exact date of construction of the
J.W. Bailey home located at 623 St. Michael in Gonzales, Texas
records were researched in the Gonzales County Archives, The
Gonzales Inquirer, Sanborn Fire Maps, and tax roll records in the
Texas State Archives. Mrs. Audry Collins, age 92, provided some
anecdotes concerning her visits to the home as a young girl.
J.W. Bailey purchased the lot 4 and part of lot 5 in block 41 in
the inner town of Gonzales from H.L. Kokernot on 10/01/97 for
$8001. Apparently there was some confusion concerning the tax
liability for this year because the 1897 Gonzales County tax
records show that H.L. Kokernot still owned all of lot 5 and the
lot 4 owner was listed as unknown but placed its value at $5002.
The 1898 tax records indicate that J.W. Bailey owned property and
that the value had tripled3. This indicates that major
improvements had occurred. This tax value remained the same at
least through 1912 when a scale outline of the home appeared on
a Sanborn Fire Maps. This indicates that no additional
improvements occurred between 1898 and 1912. According to the
Gonzales Inquirer, J.W. Bailey moved into a new home during the
week of January 5, 18986. From this research we have concluded
that construction on the home was completed in December of 1897
or during the first week of 1898. As was typical of that period
the home is a frame structure with 118 cypress siding. The
foundation consists of piers of brick manufactured in Gonzales.
