of one (1) per cent, to aid in support-
ing the free public schools of Kfiid
city, for the scholastic J'ear begin-
ning Sept. 1st, 1877.
Be it ordained by the Common Coun-
cil of the city of Brenham,
1st. That i>n election sJi*H be held
in the city of Brenham, on Saturday,
the 4th day of August, 187?, to deter-
mine whether or not a tax of on«
fourth (1-4) of one (1) per cent, on th*
assessment roll of 1877, shall be levied
and collected to aid in the suppoit of
the pObli • free schools of the city f> r
the scholastic vear beginning Sept, 1st.
1877.
2d. That fit such election,no pemn
shall be entitled to vote, tinless his
name shall appear upon the lists of re*-
dent taxpftye s hereinafter mentioned.
:id. That those voting in fnvor of
the levy and collection of said t«v
shall have written or printed on the'r
ballots, "For the School Tax," or some
other equivalent Words, and those vot-
ing againt such levy and collection
shall have written or printed on their
ballots, "Against, the School Tax," or
some other equivalent tvords,
4th. That fof the pflrpose of facili
tating the several officers charged with
holding said election and declaring the
result thereof.it is hereby made the duty
of the Assessor and Collector to make
out from the. last assessment roll, and
to furnish to the several judges of the
election, and to the City Council each,
a certified copy of all the qualified vo-
ters reading in, and paying a tax on
property within the limits of the city.
Cth. That such election shall be or-
dered, and conducted, and tho canvass
of the returns made and declared as
provided for other elections.
6th. That all ordinances, »nd parrs
of ordinances inconsistent herewith,
be and the same are hereby repealed,
and that this ordinance take effect, and
be in force from and after its passage,
and until repealed by the City Council
of Brenham.
