First Watermelon.—On Sun-
day morning Sam Miller, a treed •
man living on the Breedlove

presented the Banner with the
"first ripe watermelon" of the
season. The melon was not

AN ORDINANCE.
TO Provide for the receipt of subscrip-
tions, and for the erection of a build-
ing for white Public Free Schools of
the city :
Be it ordained by the City Council of
the city ot Brenham :
Skc. 1 Whereas, many citizens of
the city < f Brenham, have subscribed a
fund for tht> erection of a building (or
the Public Free Schools of the city ;
and whereas, it has become necessar
that the fund aforesaid should be co
lecied and applied to the purpose for
which it vas intended ; that, Messrs.
E. Reichardt and Julian McFarland be
and are hereby appointed a committee
to receive the said subscription, and to
superintend and supervise the erec-
tion of said building.
Sec. 2. Said committee, before fnter-
ing upon the discharge of their dnties
shall execute a goo4 and sufficient
bond, with one or more securitios, pay
able to the city of Brenham in the sum
of fifteen thousand dollars, conditioned
ou the faithful discharge of their du-
ties; as herein set out.
Skc. 3 The said committee are in-
structed and authorized to enter into a
coutract in the name of the city with
som« suitable person <>r persons for the
erection of said building, taking bond
from said contractor for the completion
