STATE NEW8.
— A heavy frost reported at
Tcxarkana on Sunday night.
— Grasshoppers in portions
of Hood county are damaging
late cotton.
— Fort Worth had received
10,372 bales of cotton up to the
19th inst.
— Indianola lumber dealers
get their supplies from Florida
by schooners.
— At Cuero cotto i is com-
ing in slowly. Trade in wool
and hides is brisk.
— In Flatonia they call mo-
lasses long sweetning and sugar
short sweetning.
— Democrats and republi-
cans will both run municipal
tickets at Austin.
— District court is in session
at Bastrop—the criminal dock-
et is unusually heavy.
— The Marlin Ball of last
week sold the circus a whole
page, consequeetly his reading
matter runs short.
— F. S. Megill, of Floresville,
was killed by Henry Holdusen,
a neighbor. Holdusen was cra-
zy when he did the killing.
— At Flatonia the freight
trains wholly disregard the
rights of citizens and blockade
the street crossings at will.
— A new station and post-
office called Yarborough has
been established nine miles
from Navasota on the C. and
M. railroad.
—The Dcnisou Herald thinks
that city should have a work
hurse for the benefit of those
chaps who are unable to pay
their fines.
— Grasshoppers passed over
YVaxahachie in clouds going
south. They so obscured the
sun on Saturday that stars were
visible at 12 m. None stopped
in that vicinity.
— Three men passed through
Hardin last week driving 39
horses stolen in Liberty county;
they were followed and two of
the men and all the horses were
captured in Jasper county.
— Horace Alsup was shot
and killed by an unknown as-
sassin at his home 011 the Ye-
gua in Lee county, last week.
The shot was fired from ambush
about 12 o'clock in the day.
— The Bastrop Advertiser
allowed two of its correspon-
dent to get into a controversy
in its columns and it now finds
itself under the necessity of re-
fusing further communications.
—While Jack McDonald was
playing a game of billiards in a
Bastrop billiard saloon, some
one fired at him with a pistol
and came very near killing him.
No clue to the would-be assas-
sin.
— Nip Walker, a somewhat
celebrated horse thief in north-
ern Texas, has just been given
ten years by a Dallas jury, with
two more charges yet to answer.
Walker has a young wife who
was present in the court room
when the jury came in. A far-
mer who was in court remark-
ed, "That's purty rough. I feel
for his wife; but this hoss-thiev-
ing business is got to be stop-
ped."
— Juan Turner killed a Mex-
ican on a ranch near Browns-
ville some time ago. It was re-
marked on the street corners
that Turner would not live till
Christmas. A few days ago he
was found dead with four bul-
let holes in his body.
— Digging is going on in the
vicinity of Lampasas-—they im-
agine that the precious metals
can be found there. There is
no doubt but that there is plen-
ty of gold and silver in the soil
and the best instruments to ob-
tain it are the hoe and plow, got
the pick and shovel.
— The other day two men
rode up to Engle's store at
Bluff postoffice, four miles from
LaGrange, dismounted went
into the store and priced some
goods; one of them then drew a
pistol on Engle and bulldozed
him. - They got $200 in money
and some goods, after which
they mounted and rode off.
After the conclusion of a live-
ly horse-trade on Lamed street
west yesterday a witness of the
transaction asked one of the
traders what sort of a horse he
had got by the exchange
"Oh, just medium—just a
common sort of a plug," was
the reply.
"How old is he?"
"Twenty years old."
"But 1 did not see you ex-
amine his teeth."
"No, you did not, young man.
I have traded horses for the
last thirty years, and I have
owned as many as eight hun-
dred different animals. My rule
has
■ 1*
3 been to mentally
dalcuu.. - tiie.age of the other
man's norse at twenty. In this
way I make no mistakes and
suffer no disappointments."
"Didn't your rule ever fail ?"
"Well, it did fail once. I was
trading horses in Pontiac, and I
made the usual estimate of
twenty years, but" the critter
died of old age while I was try-
ing to beat a grocer down two
cents on the price of a peck of
oats."—Dctroid Etee Ptess.

DRY-GOODS. iO-ROCERIES,
We hope to see Democrats
contine to control the affairs of
Texas, and do not apprehend
any such contingency as their
losing the state. But it may be
said, in all frankness, that no
healthier fate could befall the
party than a still futher cutting
down of its majority Another
one hundred thousand Demo-
cratic majority in Texas would
be a misfortune, whereas could
the party come out forty thou-
sand or fifty thousand votes
ahead, it would be in a far
healthier condition more com-
petent and willing to give the
people good government. So,
if General Hamman can mus-
ter up eighty thousand Green-
backers to go to the polls next
year, and General Norton or any
other Republican keep up a res-
pectable and vigorous organiza-
tion of that party, it will be all
the better for Democracy and
for Texcs. Good government
is what the people want, and
they believe the Democratic
party can give it to them.—
