that we can see no better plan
than the convention system.
The matter lies with the people
themselves and if they will only
do their duty, by attending pri-
mary meetings and seeing to it,
that the right kind of men are
elected as delegates, there will
be no stocking of conventions,
and no nominating of cut-and-
dried tickets. All that the peo-
people ask i; honest and compe-
tent officers. The day has past
for putting in professional of-
fice seekers; men who make a
life's business of holding office
and who became chronic of(v
cials, believing that the people
owe theni a living. There arc
plenty of good hones* compel
tent men to fill all the offices;
and, if the people will only be-
stir themselves and take matteas
into their own hands they ca.

county affairs there is no politi-
cal point at issue, but we want
Democratic office holders be-
cause we believe them to be in
sympathy with the people and
that they will more faithfully
discharge their duties than
Republicans, who politically
have nothing iti common with
us. After a invention has met
and made nominations it is too
late to find fault, as is frequently
the case. Many worthy men
take no part in primary meet-
ings, thus committing a grave
and very serious error, one that
cannot be justified by going to
the polls and voting, bccause
the, mischief is done at the time
a bad nomination is made. The
work must be done before the
day of election comes. It is as
imperative a duty for every
voter to attend his primary
meetings and discuss the issues
pending, afld the proper men to
nominate for office, as it is to

The Governor has issued a
proclamation establishing quar-
antine on the 10th of May.
This is a month earlier than last
year, because the governor has
been solicited to take that pre-
caution, by those who believe
that there is greater danger now
than at this time last year, and
they submit facts in support of
their views.'
The Waco Examiner says
the greenback element is loom-
ing up as an important factor in
the coming election, and many
of the most zealous members of
that party are old Democrats.
While we are not disposed to
make*light of the greenback
movement, wethipk its strength
in this State does not amount
to anything at present, and
judging of the material of
which it is composed, taking
the Austin Convention as a sam-
ple, it certainly shows no
strength.
