Washington, March 2.
This place to day presents
very little of the appearance of
Wing but recently "been tlie
capital of an Jt»(Jepe0^ewt Re-
public* Still thpre is much
more business and life ab„QUt the
place than I expected to find.
The town contains nine dry
•*oods stores, eftch of which also"
deals to some extent in groceries.
A wind milt throws out its
wide spreading arras to catch
the passing breeae; so that
* " When tbe wind Maws,
Then the mill goes,
When the win* dil»pa,
Then the irttH'«t<»pa."
It blows with 'sufficient foree
inncli of the time' to propel a
«ixty saw Gullet gin, and of
course cart £>l*irid' not gin
»)ing—providinfr always that the
wind has sufficient force.
There is a hotel equal to the
demands of the place, and as
there is but one whiskey mill, I
inter that the place is quite
healthy.
The Presbyterian Church is
the only one used. Those be-
longing to the other denomina-
tions seccumbeu to time and the
storm last year, rendered their
occupancy no longer safe. Bat
the Presbyterians, in the true
spirit of Christianity, have
thrown open their doors for the
use of other denominations,
when not occupied by them-
selves.

neat residences to be aeen, I
woul'd say wefe in a high gtatc

The iron 'bridge ncfoM the

little town of Courtney, about

be thrown open for the travel-
ling public in the coarse of two
