leaving in the community only one evidence of their for-

Both houses of Congiess adjourned on Thursday last
for three days. The next morning the President and
Vice President, many Senators and members of the low

The house of Rothschild was said to have signed a
contract for twenty millions of reals, of wlrch it appears
a considerable share has already been advanced. No

We are glad to find that our citizens arc gradually re.
liuquishing the practice of wearing weapons. A practice
which invariab.y indicates that the community in which
it is tolerated, is infested with blackguards and scoundrels.
Robbers and pirates are alwas armed, because theydis'
trust each other. Blackguards and cowards delight to
appear loaded down with weapons, because they know
they are universally despised, and, therefore, are always
fearful of personal violence. Gci&tmen need no such
protection those unwritten laws which have been estab
jished in all well regulated societies by the respectable
and intelligent, preserve them from insult and injury in
the company they frequent. W hencver we meet a person
professing to be a gentleman, with a Bowie knife protru-
ding from'his bosom, or a pistol from his pocket, we re
gard him with the samo feelings that we entertain to-
wards a knave who is sneaking away from a whipping
post Such instruments are substantial evideneps that he
has been frequenting the grogshops, or tho brothels;
they declare, plain as words, that he has been in bad com
pany.
There is oae class of mir citizens which'wo bclicvo will
never relinquish Ibis practice. Wc mean thoso misera-
ble grog shop pests, called rowdies. They may bo daily
seen at the bar-rooms, flourishing their pistols and Bowie
knives over a glass of whiskey, threatening death and
annihilation to some individual who has incurred their
wratb, probably by no greater ofienco than refusing, to
dunk with them. Poor creatures ! however terrible
A most violent discussion took place before a division
was allowed on the second part of Lord Maidstone's mo
tion, which was, "that Mr. O'Connell, having avowed the
said expression, has been guilty of a breach of the priv-
ileges of the House," which was carried by a majority of
208 the numbers being 293 to 85. Lord Maidstone then
