NEWBOUER BROTHERS.
Short.
Tho talk ol the town on Tues-
day was the shortage of C.C. Lieb,
county treasurer. Some days ago
tho commissioners' court ordered
tho architect of the new court-
house to be paid $2000 out of the
courthouse fund. In accordance
withjtho order the county clerk is-
sued his dralton the treasurer. .The
draft was presontod at the treasar.
er's office last Wednesday. Mr.
Lieb was at home near town; word
was sent to him and he said he
would bo in town on Thursday
morning and pay it. He failed to
keep his appointment and Mr.
Preston, tho holder of the draft,
took it to Austin and deposited it
with a bank for collection, it was
sent hero "fcr colliclion, but as
Mr. Lieb could not be found
it was protested. Mr. Lieb
was still at home on Tuesday.
Competent judges estimate that he
has or should havo on hand not
less than $20,000 of county funds,
about $15,000 of which is court-
house money, and tho balance be-
longs to other funds. The deduc-
tion is, that if tho treasurer can
not pay $2000 he has no funds on
hand. One of his sureties, Mr.
Hartig, has made application for
release. Some weeks ago the
treasurer began putting off holders
of school vouchers. The mystery
is, what has become of the money?
