signs of plutocracy.

would seem to be a rather aggra-

There is a feeling of appre-

of the coronation excitement to
acquire more power and prop-

The most lavish expenditure
for coronation gems and robes

England is to pay for peace in
South Africa.

For a thousand years the
kings of England have been
anointed with oil at coronation—
oil poured by an archbishop from

of them have turned out to be
wretched rulers and bad men.

■lohn Gilmer Speed, in the cur-
rent number of Ainsloe's Maga-
zine, contributes tin interesting
article on the distribution of
wealth in the United States.
Sotne of the figures he gives will
no doubt be surprising to our
readers. For example, he makes
the statement that 1 per cent of
the families of this country own
more than half the wealth repre-
sented on the tax books, and he
puts the total number of families
at 15,500,000. Even the blindest
of us cannot fail to detect in this
item of information an element
of very grave danger to our in-
stitutions, as it plainly shows
that »'e are drifting toward the
dr»',tl»d waters of centralization,
Mt Speed divides the aggregate
number of families in thif coun-
try into four classes, as follows:
The wealthy classes, worth $50,*
000 and over; the well-to-do
classes worth from So,000 to $50, •
000; the middle classes worth
from £500 to $5,000, and the
p hirer classes worth under $500.
Takitig them tip each in turn he
finds itiat the wealthy dieses t»m •

1,937,700 f *miii«» with an ag-
gregate wealth of $33,000,000, •
000 and an average wealth of
$17,000 Embraced in what are
known as the middle classes
there are 6,773,400 families, with
an aggregate wealth of $1,850.
Lastly the poorer classes em-
brace 6,773,400 families, whose
total property holdings aggregate
$2,500,000,000 and whose average
assets are $370. Footing up the
whole table he finds that all four
of the classes into which the pop-
ulation is divided are together
worth §100,000,000,000 and are
separately worth an average of
$6,450.
On examining the above fig-
ures more closely we will find
that there are 13,740,800 in this
country whose property holdings
are not even up to the average;
and this disclosure, taken in
connection with the appalling
fact that more than one-half of
the total wealth of the population
is owned by only 1 per cent of
the families of the country,
shows that tha situation is really
growing serious and that some-
thing must be done if we expect
to remain a republic governed by
the wisdom of the many and not
become an oligarchy governed
by the edicts of the few.

bin e Hippocrates discovered lint nil
kinds of disorders wero produced by tbe
vitiated fluids of the body, men have sought
to aid nature by methods , a kulated to puri-
fy the blood, promote digestion, nutrition
and eicretion, stimulate Inactive livers, kid-
neys and bowels, and as yet no attainment
of science haa surpassed th« old "St Bernard
Vegetable Pills," Sold by all druggists.
The editor of American Medi-
cine ruthlessly smashes a long
established theory. He says:
"There is not on record an au-
thenticated case of snake bite
cured by whisky. Plenty of in-
dividuals bitten while under the
influence of liquor have died,
large amounts of alcohol have
failed to save life in many cases.
Only about one in Bix of those
bitten by venomous snakes dies.
The remaining five are cured by
anything they happen to have
taken Stimulation ia excellent,
but the giving of whisky to
drunkenness by lowering the re-
sistive vitality has undoubtedly
been a causative faotor in many
deaths supposedly from snake
bite that would otherwise not
have occured." Thus perishes
another popular illusion and with
it the correlated utility of both
snakes and whisky.

Sact that the tablier front is to be
well represented among the new

terest our readers to know of a
very recently imported skirt
in which the tablier front was
pre-eminent. It is cut in f >ur

shaped to give the necessary
flare. Each section is shirred to
the other with tiny up*standing

The
settlement of the long
standing territorial dispute be-
tween Chile and Argentina is a
distinct triumph for arbitration.
For many years these South
American republics, which are
among the most powerful and
progressive in the southern half
of this hemisphere, have been in
controversy over their boundary
line in the Andes, frequently
being on the verge of war.. It is
therefore gratifying that an ami-
cable and atemingly permanent
adjustment of the dispute has
been effected. The signing of the
agreement between Chile and
Argentina may be taken as an
earnest of the growing spirit of
conciliation and good feeling
among the nations of this hemis-
phere, which in part at least may
be attributed to the salutary in-
fluence of the pan-American con-
gress so recently held in the City
of Mexico.
