The twenty-first annual aes-
Bion o£ the Texas Press Associa-
tion has passed into history. The
twenty-second session will be
held in the queen city of south
Texas—Houston—in the year
1901. Brior*.leaving for home
Friday afternoon President John
Bton of the Houston Post told the
association that he thought it was
about time that it was coming
back home to, Houston, where it
was organized and where a num-
ber of its first meetings were
held. So when the Bayou City
was placed in nomination by Mr.
W. W. Dexter as the place for
the next annual meeting, Hous
ton won without a dissenting
voice.
All business at the morning
session, which included the elec-
tion of officers, was transacted by
what appeared to be unanimous
consent. Never in the history o
the organization, so the older
members say, has such perfec
harmony prevailed. The secre
tary cast a unanimous vote for
the following officers, into whose
hands the destinies of the asso
oiation for the years 1900-1901
have been committed:
President, Hon. E. W. Harris
of the Greenville Morning Her-
ald; first vice-president, Fred B.
Robinson of the Huntsville Item;
second vice-president, Hon. C.
N. Ousley of the Galveston Tri-
bune; third vice-president, S. J.
Thomas of the Comanche Chief;
secretary, Frank Vernon of the
Cisco Round-Up, reelected;
treasurer, C. F. Lehmann of the
Hallettsvllie Herald, reelected;
attorney, E. G. Senter of Dallas,
reelected; orator, R. W. Martin
of the Uabesville Messenger; es-
sayist, Thomas E. Lusk of the
Italy News-Herald; poet, Mrs. S.
Isidore Minor of the Dal-Gal.
News.
The morning session of the
last day began at nine o'clock
with a report from the memorial
committee including appropriate
resolutions on the death of the
ate lamented W. M. Yandell of
El Paso. The report is given in
ull elsewhere. Feeling and elo-
quent tributes were paid to the
memory of this veteran journa
ist by Messrs. E. G. Senter and
J. G. Rankin.
The committee on membership
reported favorably on the appli-
cation of T. K. Garrett of the
Huntsville Daily Post.
John W. Dale of Bowie moved
that all members of the associa-
tion publish the resolutions re-
ported by the memorial commit-
tee on the death of Dr. Yandell.
The motion was carried. Presi-
dent W. H. Mayes announced
the committee to arrange for the
erection of a suitable memorial
shaft to Dr. Yandell's memory
aa follows: E. G. Senter, chair-
man ; Mrs. S. Isidore Minor, F.

The resolution authorizing the
appointment of this committee
carried with it an appropriation
of $100 out of the funds of the
association, and it is expectec
that offerings will be made by al
members of the organization
The report of the committee on
libel, of which Hon. E. G. Sen
ter is chairman, had been made
the special order of business for
ten o'clock. In making the re
port, which will be published in
full in these columns, Mr. Senter
made a ringing speech at consid
erable length on the outrageous
condition of the press of Texas as
the law now stands. When the
ten minutes allowed by the by
laws for all speeches had been
exhausted, the speaker was
granted further time. The ap-
plause that greeted the remarks
of the speaker was an evidence
of the interest felt by the asso-
ciation in this most important of
all matters to come before it. A
motion was made and carried ap-
propriating funds to pay for the
typewriting of the report so that
the daily press of the state could
be provided wtth copies.
Just at this junoture one of the
most pleasing episodes in the
history of the meeting occurred.
Mrs. Harry Haynes, president of
the Woman's Christian Temper-
ance Union, in behalf of the or-
ganization, presented the presi-
dent with a beautiful bouquet of
fOqes. In presenting them Mrs.
Haynes asked that they be ac-
cepted as a token of the esteem
felt by the Union for the associ-
ation and an acknowledgment of
the many favors bestowed by the
individual members of the press
on the W. C. T. U. Mr. Clarence
Ousley"occupied the chair at the
time of the presentation. In re-
ply to Mrs. Haynes he said the
association appreciated the flow
ers, not alone for their beauty
| and fragrance, but because of
the beautiful sentiments repre-
sented.
Mr. F. B. Holland moved that
the appellation of "colonel" be
abrogated hereafter when the
association referred to General
Passenger Agent Keenan of the
Gulf, Colorady and Santa Fe
railroad and President Farns-
worth of the Southwestern Tele-
graph and Telephone company,
and that hereafter thsir official
titles be "general." The motion
was adopted amid much laughter.
J. W. Dale invited the associa-
tion to meet with the Northwest
Texas Press Association at
Bridgeport on the second Tues
day in August, and promised all
who attended a banquet in the
coal mines three hundred feet un
der ground with the torches of
i,he miners for lamps.
D. 0. Lively of the Live Stock
Association invited the associa
tion to attend the International
jive Stock Exhibit at Chioago,
December 1 to 8.
On motion of F. B. Robinson
the association adjourned subjec
to the will of the president, it be
ing the intention to hold a sort 0:
adjourned session at Galveston
as prodided for by the executive
oommittee at the Dallas meeting
At one o'clock the T. P. A
banquet was served in the large
reception room adjoining the
convention hall. Hon. Harry
Haynes was master of ceremo*
nies, and the following toaBts
were responded to during the
dinner:
"Optimism in Journalism" —
Col. F. B. Baillio.'
"The Nicaraguan Canal"—E
G. Senter.

gress"—F. B. Holland.

Ousley.
"Women in Journalism"—
"Mary Jane" Cox.
"What are We Here For?"-
John H. Cullom.
"Our Guests"—Rev. J. L.

Mr. G. Herbert Brown arrived
from Galveston on the noon train
via the Santa Fe, in time for the
banquet. He reported that the
local press committee of th? Isl-
and City had everything in read-
iness for the coming of the gang.
At 4:25 o'clock the entire as-
sociation left in a special oar via
the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe
railroad for Galveston. From
here they will go to Beaumont
and return by the way of Hous-
ton.
The following resolutions were
adopted:

Tbe committee on memorials,

To Hon. W. H. Mayes, president:
"Your committee on mortality
is pained to report the death since
last ipeeting of Dr. W. M. Yan-
dell, former president of this as-
sociation, and the friend and
brother of us all. One of the
founders of this association, the
nobility and gentleness of his
character, the out-spoken sym-
pathy of a kindly soul, was
stamped indelibly upon it In in
ancy as a rule of action and as a
rich legacy to us which shoald be
ever guarded and preserved<
Sis connections and duties were
arge and varied, but his closest,
dearest ties were here, His rest
found her*. In our annual
meetings he gathered strength
and solace with which to offsett
other afflictions. We deplore hit
death as the fall of one of the
pillars of our organization and a
>ersonal loss to the entire mem-
>ership. May his memory be
kept as fragrant with us as were
his deeds. As a token of our
ove, it is recommended that a
page of the minutes of this asso-
ciation be dedicated to him with
suitable inscriptions."
