ALABAMA AT TIE CRANO.
A Southern War and Love Story Told on
the Stage.
A fairly good house greeted
jire&eutatiou of -'Alabama" at
Grand last night.
This play is distinctively an Ameri-
can play about America, with its
scenes laid in Taladega, Alabama,
and the whole story so prettily told
on the stage, about post-bellum south-
ern life, appeals to the common heart
and plays upon its tender cords.
Already the columns of the Banner
have coutained the plot, which briefly
recapitulated is as follows :
Colonel Prestou is an old southerner
who, fifteen years after the war, still
hates the North. He has double rea-
sons, for not only has his cause been
defeated, but his only son Harry gave
allegiance to the Uuion and fought on
that side, and is supposed to have
been killed. The old mau still lives
on his plantation at Talladega. A
railroad is to run through the little
town, and Its projection brings to the
place a Northern railroad man, Cap-
tain Davenport, accompanied by a
young Northern surveyor. The form-
er, who is in reality the supposed dead
son of old Colonel Prestou, conceals his
identity for some time, tearing that
his father still cherishes resentment
The play opens iu the home of Mrs.
Page, who, before marrying Dafeney
Page, had loved Harry Preston, but
they had been separated by cruel
pareuts. Young Preston bad also
married afterwards, but after leaving
for the North his wife had died and
left a child, Carey Preston, an Ala-
bama blossom, of whose existence her
father has thus far been kept in
ignorance. These threads of the story
are deftly interwoven and gathered
up in a logical and cohereut way In
the final scene, at the conclusion of
which oue breathes a sigh of relief
5J1 at it all ended so happily, and goes
away with the consciousness of hav
icg seen one of the prettiest plays o_
the seasou.
Many of Them A flowed to Roam
Around and Bag.
From all over the State comes the
news of burglaries, robberies and in-
ceudiary fires and the Banner, in
commou with many citizens, believes
many of these crimes if traced to their
true source would be found to have
been committed by the army of
tramps, and professionals "bums"
that infest the country, many ofwbich
have recently found their way to this
city.
A waljc around the city would bring
you In contact with a dozeu or more
any day and with no restraiut daily
they are growing bolder, some of them
making a house to bouse canvass of
the city begging for money "to reach
ftlek relatives," to "go home on," or to
"pay railroad fare to a hospital'
though all of these stories truly In-
terpreted would me&n "gi ve me money
to buy whiskey, I can beg all the
bread I peed." ; 'L ,f/ |. **%
.Some of these tramps are
to ladies whey they discover
no man on the premises and
men some of them taking advantage
of au affliction, they get impudent and
sassy if you refuse to listen patiently
to their "tales o{ &bd full tO re-
spond promptly to thelf appeals.
Tuesday night Ik Ohe legged "bum"
while tanked up admitted that h* had
Worked the town for $68.1n two days,
but he refused to relieve the wants of
a fellow bum who had just come in
and did need assistance.
In fact they all need assistance—out
out town—or to the oonvict farm, and
it Is time f)r the vagrant law to De en-
forced.
Of course officers t>hould use some
discretion in the matter, a« there are
unfortunate tramps, but there are
more professional "bums" and it is
the professional "bum" that "works"
the public in the easiest way that his
immagination can invent, whether It
be to steal, lie or rob, not being choice
which of these methods he employs;
trusting to his judgment ofhis victim
as to which will be the best way to
work him for what he wants.
I fthe officers would arrest some of
these "bums" and send a few of them
to the county farm it would have a
wonderful effect in diminishing the
number that come here and at present
regard Breuliam as a mecca for their
operation.
They read the papers and they
would soou know what to expect here
aud they would give Brenham a wide
berth.
Enforce the vagrant law.

many a good ship that has gone to pieces

unlock the breasts and looseu the
tongues that holds the secret—the
blighted hopes of some gallant swain
or perhaps the fickleness of womau

the two lacerated hearts with love
unrequited, be ^laid bare, and the
stern decree of unrelenting parents be
shown as a barrier to the domestic
felicity that came so near, yet missed
so far, the consumation of hopes
